Kara Goldin on the Steve Jobs Quote That Gives Her Strength in Difficult Times

The founder and CEO of Hint Inc. discusses her secret life hack and a quote that gives her strength.

When you have the opportunity to ask some of the most interesting people in the world about their lives, sometimes the most fascinating answers come from the simplest questions. The Thrive Questionnaire is an ongoing series that gives an intimate look inside the lives of some of the world’s most successful people.

Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Kara Goldin: Stretch, then check my calendar and my email. This allows me to mentally prepare for my day and respond to anything urgent to avoid walking into a fire drill when I get to the office.

TG: What gives you energy?
KG: Drinking lots of water (more specifically, hint water), throughout the day. Hydration is so vitally important to staying energized and healthy, so you’ll rarely find me without a hint in hand. Of course, I also love to start my day with a long hike with my dogs and sometimes my husband too.

TG: What’s your secret life hack?
KG: Exercise. I wake up at 5:30 am every day so I can go on a 45-minute hike in the morning with my dogs and husband. Starting my day with exercise while also enjoying the outdoors and fresh air helps me stay balanced and refreshed so I’m ready and excited to take on the day.

TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
KG: On silent when I go to bed. I’m on the go a ton, so I’m very dependent on my phone to stay connected with my family and business and do a lot of work from my phone. That said, I do value the importance of unplugging every now and then and being present, especially when I’m with my family and the hint team.

TG: How do you deal with email?
KG: I’m extremely diligent about looking at and responding to every email. I can’t always get to emails in real time, but at some point every day I will devote dedicated time to going through every single email until by inbox is empty.

TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
KG: If I’m not using this time to catch up on email I like to go for a walk or connect with someone on my team I haven’t caught up with in a while (or both at the same time!).

TG: When was the last time you felt burned out and why?
KG: I travel a ton, which I usually love, but every now and then I have an insane travel schedule where it feels like I’m practically living on a plane for weeks on end. I recently got back from one of these whirlwind trips, and while it was extremely productive, I was so happy to finally be home for a couple weeks to recharge and get some cuddle time with my dogs.

TG: Share a quote that you love and that gives you strength or peace.
KG: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs. I truly live by this quote because I love what I do and I know that I’m doing something important for health in America. Of course there can be difficult days, so this is always a nice reminder.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
