Monáe discusses how the latest election impacted both her emotions and creativity. “I got to the point where I stopped recording because I was just like, ‘I’m going to make an angry album,’” she says. She reflects on her feelings about the political climate saying, “I felt it was a direct attack on… black women, on women, on women’s rights, on the LGBTQIA community”.

The singer knew she had to address these feelings. “I didn’t want to censor them,” she says, as she discusses her decision to begin therapy. This confrontation began the difficult task of transforming her anger into love. “It’s easy for me to just stay angry, but it’s harder for me to choose love,” Monáe says. Instead of letting her anger consume her, the singer says she’s found an opportunity to make a difference. “I am gonna fight for love,” she says.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
