The benefits of a four-day work week are vast, but making it a reality can be a challenge for businesses. In some states, laws make it difficult for businesses to switch to a four-day work week. There are several things that must occur to make this change possible so that the employees reap the benefits while the needs of clients are still being met.

The Benefits Of A Four-Day Work Week

Employees benefit greatly from having a four-day work week. Not only does it cut down on their travel expenses, it allows them time during the week to spend time with their families and to make appointments that otherwise would have required a vacation day.

The business also benefits from a four-day work week since employees spend less time off-task and more time being productive. Knowing that the same amount of work needs to be achieved in a shorter time-frame motivates employees to stay on task instead of browsing social media, taking longer lunches, or chatting with their co-workers.

The Challenges Businesses Face

Businesses need to tread lightly when it comes to instituting a four-day work week. Ensuring that the needs of clients are still being met, even though the business might be closed or short-staffed one day each week, is of utmost importance. Keeping clients informed of the new schedule is the best way to maintain an excellent working relationship, despite the changes.

They also need to check with the local and state laws regarding switching to a four-day work week. Some states, like California, require the business to hold a secret ballot election with a two-thirds majority vote necessary to pass a four-day work week schedule.

Is It Really Possible?

So is a four-day work week really a possibility? The answer is, it depends on the business. As long as the needs of clients are being met, employees are on-board, and state laws are being followed, a business can certainly attempt to switch to a four-day work week.

If the change fails, a regular five-day work week schedule can resume. The benefits of a four-day work week certainly outweigh the risk, so for many businesses, it’s worth trying.
