The lockdown due to the coronavirus crisis has only just begun. We have 12 days or more ahead of us, depending on how the pandemic evolves, and we must look for ideas to entertain ourselves. If we have children at home, the task is even more complicated. The kids need to go to the park, play with other children and run free. In order for them to be calm and distracted at home, we must have resources at hand and propose several fun activities.

Shuffleboard is a fun table game. The objective of the game is relatively simple; keep your quoits on the board while knocking your opponents off the board. Some strategies and techniques can help you gain a competitive advantage.

Play the shuffleboard Game

The most common shuffleboard table game is called “Knock Off”. You can play this against another opponent, or against another team of two. The goal is to be the first player or team to score 21 points. A move consists of each alternating player sliding four metal quoits under the table. There are three scoring lines at each end of the table. Depending on where the quoit ends, the score is determined. The first line is a fault line. If the quoit does not reach it or lands in line of account as zero. Anything between the foul line and the second line counts as a point 1. Between line two and line three, it counts 2 points, and anything between line three and the back edge of the table is 3 points. If the quoit hangs on the back edge of the table and does not fall, it is called a “hanger” and is worth 4 points. The quoit must be completely passed a score line to count towards the particular point value. If any part of the quoit is considered on the line, it counts one point less. After all eight quoits are played, then you add up the points for that turn. Only one person can mark that, given his turn, as only the most distant quoits of the same color will count. Reproduction Techniques

Simple techniques can improve your ability to place the quoit in the area of ​​the table you are looking for. The first thing you have to understand is the speed of the table. Shuffleboard “powder” is often added to the table to help reduce friction which decreases the low quoit. The more dust that is added to the table the faster the quoits will slide. On a flash table, a slight push is all it takes to send all your quoits flying off the board. One of the best techniques you can employ on the shuffleboard table is to learn to play quoit with both hands. By maintaining the quoit and sliding your hand along each side of the board, you will develop a better ability to control the speed and position of the quoit. This takes practice,

Strategies for the game

If you play first, try to place your quoit on both sides of the board and not in the middle. This makes it more difficult for your opponent to knock you off the board. If you play a quoit and your opponent cannot pass it, or beat it out of turn, you now have the option of trying to protect that quoit, or try to beat it further up the board. If you choose to protect the exposed quoit, you want to play another one that ends up well behind and slightly off the center of the first quoit. This will make it very difficult for your opponent to bring down the leadership quoit with his next turn. This strategy is best employed when the lead quoit has been played quite deep on the board. If the exposed quoit is somewhere in the 1 point score range, you can choose to try to knock it into a higher score box, leaving your next quoit on the table behind him. Anyway, the whole idea in each shift is to leave as many quoits on the board as possible, in positions that cannot be easily knocked out. Remember, only the most distant quoits of a color will count as points for that turn.
