Mr. Rory Brown is a Managing Partner of Nicklaus Brown & Co., the Chairman of Ad Genius, Goods & Services, Nearshore Technology Company, and a member of the board of directors of Desano.
Mr. Brown has focused on financial technology and investment management over the course of his career. He was a Founder and Chairman of one of the first Internet Banks, a Founder and Chairman of a $50 billion investment management platform, and the Chairman of a Registered Investment Advisor focused on high net worth individuals and families. Mr. Brown was named Financial Services Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young and has been a founder of multiple companies that have been included in the INC 500.
Mr. Brown received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Charleston, SC and is a Certified Public Accountant.
What type of books do you read?
The last thing I read is any book about business. I enjoy books by authors like Christopher Reich (www.christopereich.com). The New York Times refers to him as “The John Grisham of Wall Street.”
Does your phone sleep with you?
My phone has never made it to my bedroom and it never will.
How do you deal with email?
I try and catch up first thing in the morning, and then once again late in the afternoon. I am passionate about using filters and unsubscribing to almost everything.
You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
I try and keep my day open so that I can spend time on what is interesting to me and opportunities that change the outcome on things I am involved. As opposed to having 15 minutes available unexpectedly, I try and make sure that I always have time available.
When was the last time you felt burned out and why?
Every day I focus on trying to eat right, exercise and sleep well. If I do that, I never feel burned out.
What gives you energy?
Interacting with interesting people.
What’s your secret life hack?
Eating frozen grapes.
When was the last time you felt you failed and how did you overcome it?
I fail at something every day – and then I forget about it. Life is to short not to focus on all the great things going on around you.
