We all have an image of what a perfect home would look like. Maybe something spacious and grand, or perhaps something nice and cosy. Modern and shiny, sleek and futuristic, or perhaps something warm, classy, all oak and pine. Whatever that image may be, however it looks like, it can be difficult to actually find it in the market – rarely does reality reflect our dreams. But, if it doesn’t exist in real life, why not get it there yourself. 

Building your dream house is, well, a dream for many people. It gives you the freedom to do exactly what you want, to have your house look like the one you fantasised about for years. But this kind of luxury does not, of course, come cheap, and sometimes we need to make compromises. However, the better you are with your money, the more you save when building your dream home, the fewer compromises you will have to make. So, the article below deals with just that – how to save up some money and build your dream home.

What is most important to you?

First things first – what are the most important parts of your dream home, when are compromises out of the question? Sit down with your partner, talk to your family, and figure out what really makes a dream home so dreamy, and what can be thrown out or bargained with. Do you really want a nice porch, a pergola, or hardwood floors? Are you pretty much indifferent to the way your bathroom is going to be designed and set up?

Furthermore, this is also just a list of priorities. For example, maybe you want a really nice kitchen and a properly outfitted den. Well, the latter can definitely wait, there is nothing stopping you from setting it up differently somewhere in the future.

Communicate with your contractors 

Don’t just hire the first construction company you come across. Rather, do some research, ask around, and check out some of the other buildings they finished. 

Furthermore, always stay in contact with the builder you chose. Leave the line open, emphasize that not only do you not mind them calling you for every little thing but that you actually appreciate it greatly. Of course, be honest with them, explain what is primary in this situation, and explain what you are willing to compromise on. This all will help you save money, both in terms of time that is required to finish the home, and in terms of having the builder help you save some money. 

Building good rapport with a construction company can also help you save on materials. Namely, they can advise you on getting materials that are cheaper than you expect, all the while giving you the same end quality.

Focus on the big picture

We understand how excited you are to build your dream home. However, don’t let that excitement overcome you, don’t let it force you into obsessing over the finer details of things while missing the forest for the trees. Understand that time and money are finite resources. If you spend too much time, for example, obsessing over the tiles in your kitchen, you might run out of time and money and will then be forced to compromise on something you truly care about. 

Do your homework

Do your homework, figure out how much all of this can cost. Contractors, materials, transport… Compare the prices that are offered by various companies, see if you can get a good deal on all the stuff you need.  Furthermore, what about the costs once the house is done? How much will the utilities set you back? What about landscaping, or extra plumbing? What about licenses and paperwork that’s waiting for you once the house is done? Getting a professional quantity surveyors report to help you get a fair deal on your taxes, taking to the local administrative offices and getting permission to construct a pool, these are just some of the things you need to consider.

Furthermore, research isn’t just about getting a good deal – it’s vital for not making a serious mistake down the line. You should have the entire lot expect, have someone check the soil and see if it can handle a big structure. What about the weather conditions here? Is wood really smart, or will it become a fire hazard? Needing to replace all of this down the line is murder for your time, your wallet, and your nerves.

Do as much of the work yourself as you can

Are you any good with a tool in your hand? Do you have some construction experience? Then maybe you can put those skills to use, and save up on some money. Pitch in, do some of the work, every cent matters. For example, you might be able to the entire electrical work yourself. Or, maybe you have some experience laying tiles and installing floors. Just be honest with yourself and don’t let your ego get in the way. 

Work on getting the best loans possible

You need to think long and hard about the loan you are getting. Namely, whether you are paying for the house completely through this loan, or only in part, that will still be a considerable sum of money. Invest the time into getting a good deal at the bank, don’t just jump at the first loan you are approved for. Actually, negotiate with the bank, strike a good deal, it’s going to be worth it in the long run.

Building your dream home is not going to be cheap, no questions about that one. However, there are ways you can lower the cost of the thing somewhat. Looking for discounts and getting the best deal possible for your loan is vital. Take your time and figure out where you are ready to make compromises. Of course, focus on the big picture, the little things can wait. If you have the skills, the tools, and the know-how then getting some of the work done yourself can help you save some money. Finally, don’t forget to talk to your contractors and to do your homework.
