How to Remove Pesticides From Fruits & Veggies (Water Doesn’t Do Anything!)

From someone who developed an allergy to pesticides.

Does anyone else wash their fruit by scrubbing it with water?

I’m asking because this was the method I used, until I learned that it wasn’t good enough.

So, like many others, I grew up in a household where fruit and veggies were scrubbed and washed with water. When my mom did it, she scrubbed it hard, yet when we grew up, my brothers and I started slacking on the rubbing and scrubbing part. We ate fruit directly from the store, and we didn’t have any doubts in our heads whether it was safe enough to do so.

Yes… Even after having one brother diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and the other diagnosed with food allergies, I went on throughout my life simply eating fruit right from the store.

That was until my mouth started swelling up.

Smiling Because I figured it Out!

So, it only took seven months, 2 ENT’s, 2 visits to Urgent Care, and an elimination-based diet to figure out what was wrong with me.

To make a long story short, I found that I’m allergic to pesticides…which if you guessed, is MORE difficult to navigate than food allergies or type 1 diabetes where each ingredient is properly listed.

So Now What?

I try to eat mostly organic foods, and moderate the rest of my diet. Yes, I still have Halo Top or Enlightened here and there, and yes, I still have Quest protein powder. But I’m careful what I eat and make sure that at least 90% is organic and the rest non-organic.

However, as you all know well, organic is relatively expensive. So I’ve tried a lot, and found a solution… A special concoction of water and vinegar. And because I believe your health is important, I’m sharing it with you!

Solution: 1 part vinegar/ 3 parts water

It’s that simple.

I find that when I SOAK the fruit in there for at least an hour, I don’t have issues with the fruit.** I know it sounds crazy, but it actually works. (P.S. For those with doubts, another blogger: Happy Healthy Mama, also uses a similar concoction which you can see here!

**The only time this doesn’t seem to work is when I eat strawberries or blueberries that are not organic.

P.S. I use this scrubby! It’s the best one I’ve used to date.

So this is the first of many blogs related to my pesticide-allergy. I hope that it inspires you to be more careful as I only wish I had been before.
