How to Prosper as an Artist in the Modern World

Any individual with some sort of talent and ability is always on the look for making a career out of it. In a general view, one’s talent and skills typically come under the concept of trade. If you are able to do something well, you have a trade. If you can paint, draw, write, sing, dance, perform a surgery, diagnose diseases, sell, market, etc. you can turn it into means of living.

Talking about artists, it is often believed that most artists struggle to find recognition and are barely able to make ends meet. Thus, the idea of “starving artist” was born which instigates that anyone with an ability to draw, sketch or paint is bound to live a miserable and financially struggling life. But that was a different century, yet in some cultures art is not considered as a profession which can be translated as a prosperous career, giving out streams of income.

Many talented individuals have gone astray of their artistic pursuits just because they simply could not foresee it as a job that makes money. This has ridiculously affected people in the society and the discipline itself has dramatically suffered due to lack of interest and an audience. In many societies, an honest job revolves around the 9 to 5 capsule and there are no questions otherwise.

As times have progressed, people have shifted their perspectives to highlight at the myriad of potential lying at the disposal of art. A heap of creative artists has found incredible opportunities to elevate their skills and have a decent career in the field. This is due to entrepreneurship and the advancement of technology which has disrupted nearly every profession.

But how can a modern day artist benefit from technology?

Portia de Rossi is putting up a vibrant example. As an artist and art collector, Portia founded General Public, a company that is helping more and more artists in getting their work out to a greater number of customers. The company’s main objective is to empower artists by extending their reach to the customer base. The foundational agenda is to make an artist’s work accessible to more people, increase the customer base of an artist and not confine their work to a single collector.

General Public reproduces artwork using 3D scanning and printing technology. The procedure is called SYNOGRAPH™ and it basically creates a replica of the original artwork by maintaining the original texture, dimensions, and brushwork. The 3D copy is exactly the same as the original piece.

This way, an artist can sell more copies to a wider audience of a single artwork rather than having to create new altogether on the canvas.

Next is marketing…

An artist needs to treat their work like a product which requires marketing in order to be sold. There are countless ways of marketing your art pieces and social media trumps all. Social media platforms including Instagram are widely used by content creators and individuals to market their content, products, and services. The visually-oriented social network would help an artist reach their audience by a greater mile.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
