How did you come up with the idea for WIRL?

WIRL (Wellness in Real Life) came about as I was having what I thought was one of my simple pleasures, coffee. Coffee throughout our relationship always allowed me to have a pause moment, an alone moment, and a moment of reflection. But then, I noticed my relationship with coffee had changed. No longer was coffee allowing me to have a pause moment, it was getting me through the day. I was experiencing burnout!, and this is the story of the beginning of WIRL.

What is the platform designed to do?

WIRL is designed to help healthcare providers and workers reduce burnout and focus on self-care.

What are your best stress management tips?

Max out your positive people network. People who are positive and eliminate negative self-talk experience an increased life span, lower rates of depression, lower levels of stress, and even demonstrate greater resistance to the common cold!  Surround yourself with positivity and improve your mental health and well-being.

Lavender: Freshness for your soul!  Essential lavender oil is a natural remedy for anxiety and other stress-related conditions  Add it to your calming toolbox and add a few drops into a warm bath to soothe muscle aches and pains or to your pillow for better sleep; you can even gently massage lavender oil into your temples to relieve stress-headaches.

Can you describe how you or your organization is making a significant social impact?

With nearly 60% of healthcare workers experiencing job burnout and more than 20% saying they often or always feel burned out, there is a pervasive issue within our society.

Are there things the community and society can do to help you address the root of the problem you are trying to solve?

One the most of important things is to start to recognize that healthcare workers are bold and strong, and human too!

How do you define “Leadership”?

A couple of years ago, I won an excellence in leadership award. I thought a lot about that question.

I rely heavily on this quote when defining leadership: “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.” Sheryl Sanberg

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

“Do what you gotta do so you can do what you wanna do.”- Denzel Washington

I had to give up the coffee and address the issue at hand, which was burnout so that I can one day go back to enjoying a simple pleasure in life, a cup of coffee.
