How to motivate employees in 2019?

According to Gallup’s 2017 survey on employee engagement, “the ratio of disengaged to actively engage employees is 2-to-1′. This means that the vast majority of U.S. workers (approx. 67 per cent) is not reaching their full potential.

The leading cause of employee disengagement in work is the lack of motivation from leaders.

Their main concern is to abstain from the monotonous 9-5 job life with all work and no play.

The hectic work environment with constant struggles in hitting targets before the deadline possesses a heavy burden on them.

The lack of collaboration between leaders and the employees misbalance the whole system.

In such an organisation, the leader-employee relationship is the vital force that keeps it stable. For higher work output, the leaders ought to motivate their employees now and then.

Each bit of effort counts; therefore, the head of the system should put in innovative ideas to keep their employees in high spirits. To help the leaders in motivating their employees, here are some ideas.

1. Develop a positive workplace culture

Positive workplace culture is vital to fill employees with enthusiasm and will to work hard. Everyone needs the ‘oh! I love going to the office’ spirit.

Part and parcel of the whole system lie in the spectatorship of the leader. To make the workplace a serene environment, the leaders ought to develop a positive culture.

Become a leader who respects their employee’s time. Give them enough time to enjoy both professional and personal life.

Be a string that connects. The leaders should foster social connections within the work premises.

Getting to know each other develops a mutual understanding. It motivates everyone to work in unison and achieve their goals.

4.Appreciate and reward employees

According to the Gallup’s finding, 14 per cent of employees strongly agree that the performance reviews they receive inspire them to improve.

The employees expect a genuine review from their leaders to work in the right direction. Therefore, the leaders should appreciate their small and big efforts and reward them with a salary hike or any additives.

A firm on talking to 1000 workers in the United States demonstrated that 63 per cent of them complained in lack of appreciation from their managers as a cause for low motivation.

The urge to get promoted or receive the employee of the month award keep them boosted.

5.Involve them in goal setting and accomplishment

‘We are a team’ is the constant statement of each leader. However, actions are louder than words.
The leaders should involve their employees in the goal setting. The attitude shouldn’t be to order and get things done. Instead, the leaders should follow a code of conduct by discussing and let their employees contribute to the goals set by the company.

As per the Gallup’s finding, the employees whose managers involve them in goal setting are 3.6 times more likely to get engaged.

Engagement leads to motivation, and a heartiest will power to achieve something huge for the organisation.

6. Be an empathetic listener

We all need somebody to give ear to what remains unsaid within us. There are a lot of events going on inside-out in our work lives.

At times we feel discordant at work because of lack of motivation within us, a personal issue keeping us at despair, a dispute with our colleagues or superiors, etc.

In such a deplorable situation, our work pace declines. We seek for our leaders to take a step ahead, sit with them, and listen to them empathetically.

Our leader is like a father-figure/mother-figure to us, and their mere effort of listening to us makes us motivated.

When you listen to what they intend to say, you try to understand your team better. The leader’s ‘I-AM-THERE-FOR-YOU’ is their biggest motivation.

Make them feel your presence! Help them deal with their hard times. Walk around with them or have some life talks over a cup of tea. All your gestures matter a lot to them.

7. Renovate the workplace; hang out together

Chilin out with colleagues is old school! Nowadays, leaders and employees are more likely to hang out every once in a while.

We spend half of our day at work regularly. It has become a spot of a lifetime for us. What if we renovate the cliché dull workplace to an art studio?

Your boring office walls need graphite, the doors need wind chimes, the canteens need yum ice-creams and candies, and the leaders need the ‘let’s hangout guys’ phrase.

Make each day less boring and more happening. There is a lot to add to this life, for we only live once. Have parties when they achieve their goals.

Get to a movie, or on tour, or sit up and laugh-out-loud at each other’s funny life instances.

These all are just a bit of a lot of things that you can do to motivate your employees in 2019. With each passing year, there are more responsibilities added to their shoulders.

Lighten up their load and serve as an inspiration to them.
