When people want more time, what it boils down to is more focus and more patience. We down cups of morning coffee to jolt our brains and then wander around mid-morning for sugar to keep going, up and down and up and down. Other than getting our physiology on board (stop the sugar loop crashing — not an easy feat! I know — I couldn’t even cut it out for 24 hours!), what mindset tricks can we use?
Procrastination is an issue of motivation, of fear of failure and not knowing.
Stop the internal chatter by pasting it down. It’s so easy to get stuck in loops of ‘I can’t’ and ‘I should’. So how can you dial them down? Expel them out, write down a maximum of three sentences to address loops of ‘I can’t because…’ and ‘I should…’ (no more than three because we don’t want you to self-destruct). Now write down your worst case scenario — your absolute worse. Are you (or anyone else for that matter) dead? Are you homeless?
Sometimes we get stuck in these internal loops because they are horrible situations we don’t want to be in but we keep replaying the same first few chapters of the chatter. Yes, you could be homeless. But what can you do to mitigate that situation? Now go back and imagine you’re reading something that a close friend has written, something very raw and painful, and they’ve asked for your help. Now write back with compassion, ‘Yes, it’s scary, it’s daunting, but remember that time you did…and…’’, ‘You can…’ and ‘How about trying…’. It could be searching key terms, talking to a friend, it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t resolve your situation right away. It most likely has several variables involved, many that you probably don’t have control over. What matters is that you moved just enough to get some feedback on what to do next. And most importantly, that you’re asking and looking for solutions.
