How to be kind in a difficult situation

I’ve been fired before. More than a few times. And I’ve also had to let valuable employees go. Right now there are a lot of folks who are finding themselves out of work due to layoffs or furloughs. If this is happening to you, it is important to remain kind and understand that we are all in this together.

Finding yourself without employment is never an easy thing. But there are some steps you can take to maintain your emotional balance and set yourself up for future success. Be prepared to ask a few basic questions about the situation. When does it go into effect? What resources might be available to help the transition? Then take a moment to ask if there is anything you can do to help the person letting you go or the company.

Doing this lets you walk away with your head held up and puts you in a good position to rejoin the company if the opportunity arises.

Stay safe. If you can afford to, stay home. And remember that we are all struggling with something. Lead with kindness.
