Krishna C. Mukherjee is an inventor and a technology pioneer. He is a Microsoft veteran who was involved in the creation and development of world-famous products such as Windows and Office. Mukherjee has made highly significant contributions in the areas of enterprise architecture, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. He created the Software as a Service (SaaS) model that revolutionized software development and distribution.
Mukherjee earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur and his Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the IIT at Kanpur. He specialized in AI and Robotics. In 1988, Microsoft Corporation recruited Mukherjee from IIT Kanpur to design and develop software products for the organization. Thereafter, Mukherjee led the design and development of many popular features for Microsoft products. These features include page layout, printing, proofing tools such as Spelling and Grammar, WordBASIC, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), Object Linking & Embedding (OLE), Component Object Model (COM), AutoFormat, Office Assistant and IntelliSense.
In the late 1990s, concepts of AI and workflow automation were alien to the world. At this time, Mukherjee invented the Intelligent Filing Manager. He says, “The idea behind creating this software was to enable a steady and an efficient platform to perform multi-jurisdictional filings and maintain forms. Prior to my invention, the banking and insurance industries faced challenges filing and managing their data manually. The Intelligent Filing Manager provides a one-stop solution that eases high-volume forms publishing, where large sets of forms need to be filed simultaneously. My invention automates complex workflows in a user-friendly manner. It enables enterprises to effectively engage with their customers and become highly profitable.”
Mukherjee’s automation of business workflows inspired the creation of new technologies for Windows and open-source platforms. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) and Silverlight were developed under his leadership. Mukherjee commercialized AI in a major way. He created the SaaS model for transacting business across the Internet.
Mukherjee created the architecture and developed financial software applications that are used globally. Recently, he created the AutoPay feature that facilitates making online payments. Various industries worldwide have adopted the AutoPay feature. In a career spanning over three decades, Mukherjee has demonstrated his contributions to technology and innovation. He received awards from industry stalwarts and international institutions. His contributions to the technology landscape have created a solid foundation for the future innovators.
