Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory of how you came upon this career path and to where you are today?
Iwas Inspired by watching Anime Dragon Ball Z and Jean-Claude Van Damme in BloodSport at 10-years-old, I realized my passion for martial arts and physical fitness. The speed, agility and power I witnessed in these characters and was inspired by their ability to become stronger and more vigorous with every battle they fought. With only the television and books as my resources, I began lifting weights and teaching myself how to build my body strength, and focus on the different muscle groups. At 14-years-old, MY aunt recommendation, I tried out a martial arts program called ATA Martial Arts. There he began my lessons with trainer, Mr. Bright achieved the rank of second degree black belt from. Under Mr. Bright’s instruction, Joshua also obtained his martial arts teaching accreditation. I am a 4th degree black belt and a certified personal trainer. As both a
personal trainer and Martial Arts instructor I aspire to influence my students towards the continued pursuit of health, fitness and wellness. I feel that through martial arts, people will find their true selves, build self-confidence, and achieve their ultimate goals.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person
Mr. Larry Bright 4th degree black belt who got me started in the leadership program so I could become the instructor I am today. Master Alex Miller a 6th degree black belt and who helped me get my martial arts career started so I can become chief Instructor of my own business at BOYES’S ATA Martial Arts in belvedere CA. Thank you to everyone who is also there for me and give me support especially my little sister Eva.
you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
Randi Acton, who got me kick started in my first Movie Enter the fire.
Can you share a story with us about the most humorous mistake you made when you were first starting? What lesson or take-away did you learn from that?
I would say getting overly excited and I would Talk to fast when I do. Now I tell myself to relax and be myself and enjoy the moment.
As a celebrity, you have been blessed with great success in a career path that many have attempted, but eventually gave up on. In fact perhaps most people who tried to follow a career path like yours did not succeed. Do you have any words of advice for others who may want to embark on this career path but know that their dreams might be dashed?
You have to really want it and always set GOALS for yourself to fit who you are so that you can see the path clearly. Don’t fear change, welcome it and take action to do it!
Ok thank you for all that. Now let’s shift to the main focus of our interview. You have been successful as both a celebrity and an entrepreneur. Most celebrities don’t make that transition successfully. We’d love to learn your secret. How do you do both?
I manage the time in my life and make plans for if something comes up for a movie and I have to teach I will be ready for it. Always make time and go get it!
In my work, I focus on how one can thrive and care for oneself in three areas: body, mind, and heart. You are a busy leader with a demanding schedule, can you share with our readers two self care routines, practices or treatments that help your body thrive? Kindly share a story or an example for each.
I love to go out hiking to clear my mind and practice my Martial Arts while listening to music. It helps me keep a clear focus for my mind, body and soul.
Can you share with us two routines that you use to help your mind thrive? (Kindly share a story or example for each.) music, family and friends.
Going out and seeing new things and enjoying life with others. I truly enjoyed time with my cousins Sergio and Michael.
Can you share with us two routines that you partake in to help your heart or spiritual side to thrive? (Kindly share a story or example for each.)
Doing the things I love the most which is helping others find their potential through Martial Arts and to dance. when i go dancing i have a sense of freedom sometimes i would hit the splits on the dance floor.
the martial arts side seeing others become better at something they thought they could not do like maybe nunchucks and sometimes you get that moment when you hit yourself in the face with them.
All of us have great days and bad days. On days when you feel like a rockstar what do you do? What does that day look like, and what did you do to get there?
I loved going out to Dance. I’m always working on improving myself and my Martial Arts training.
In contrast, on days when you feel down, what do you do?
I stay positive by thinking only about the things that really matter the most and to always see the good things in life. I know how to keep my head up when things happen that are not in my control. I tell myself everyday it can’t stop me.
Is there a particular resource, a practitioner, expert, book, podcast that made a significant impact on you and helped you to thrive? Can you share a story about that with us?
Martial art movies and stories of people being successful.
Do you have a story about the strangest, most bizarre or funniest wellness treatment that you’ve ever experienced?
Comedy is a great way to feel good and to laugh. I love watching Saturday night live and enjoy making others laugh.
You’re a high achieving creative authority and leader, and yet, you may have family and loved ones that require a different side of you at home. How do you leave the high powered executive at the door, and become a loving caretaker at home?
I would bring the same energy to my home that I would in anything else I love.
We are very blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world with whom you’d like to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this. 🙂
Van Damme and Jackie chan.
