Neon lights are a bold, cosmopolitan statement that can easily revitalize or accent a space or architectural structure. With eye-catching brilliance, a host of color options, and ties to a retro aesthetic, these lighting pieces can make a space feel simultaneously modern and nostalgic. However, few understand the scientific workings or material properties of neon, and many architects neglect its use due to its close association with commercial signage.

Neon gas was discovered in 1898 and got its name from the Greek word “neos”, which meant “the new gas.” It is a colorless, odorless and inert gas under standard conditions, which emits a red-orange glow when placed in an electric field, allowing it to be used as illumination of many colors.

Advantages and uses of neon lights

Did you know that light can affect our mood? That is why it is all the more important to ensure a harmonious atmosphere with the light sources used in the apartment. Custom Neon signs is a great idea: it really makes important life events and personal messages shine. For example, you can place the lighting above a chest of drawers or arrange it with different images within a gallery.

The decisive factor is a harmonious overall picture: neon illuminated lettering is very present in the apartment! You should therefore orientate yourself among other things with the color of the neon sign to the existing decoration and use the lettering to set a colored highlight.

To place a bright neon sign on the wall, you should provide a dark background, such as a darker wall color. This makes the motif look much more intense. Smaller neon lights can quickly look lost on the wall. A combination with other objects makes perfect sense here. For example, here are the instructions for an LED wallpaper.

Neon lettering for the home

You have several options for making the trendy neon illuminated lettering yourself. The absolute classic is the neon sign on the wall. Sentences, sayings, figures or just your favorite word staged – there are no limits here. With a lettering on the wall, for example, the lounge corner at home can be upgraded.

Lounge furniture made from Euro pallets: this is how it works!

If you don’t have free space on the wall, but still don’t want to miss out on the new trend with neon lettering, it is best to use an illuminated signboard. Here you have the advantage that you can move the board flexibly – and it does not take up a lot of space and is operated with batteries. You can make such light boards yourself in many different sizes, but an A4 format is always a good idea.
