How GB Olympian Drew Sullivan Wins Before He Competes

For the past few years I have been close friends with GB Olympian Drew Sullivan. Coming from a basketball background myself, I always respect and admire those who perform at a high level both on and off the court. Drew Sullivan is no exception. While his winning on the basketball court throughout the years is impressive, something much deeper was brought to my attention when we began working together.

Initially it was first noticed when I asked him to write the foreword for my mental health book entitled ‘The Suicide Note’. He asked me exactly what I needed, and when I need it by. This showed me immediately how he works, which gave insight into perhaps how he prepares as an athlete for battle. We sat and made a plan and low and behold, I was correct. To this day I know without a doubt that if he says he is going to do something, consider it done. This unique quality although it has been very useful I’m sure in his sporting career, translates into any venture he sets his energy towards. Take RGA Leicester (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club), which Drew is the head instructor for in the Leicester branch; A growing club that impacts the lives of so many young people several times per week. Another business opportunity came up one evening and it was a no brainer for me for Drew to attend. He politely said ‘Steve, I have made a commitment to these kids at RGA, I have to put them first’. Attribute alert: He stands by his word, values his commitments and this is just the start of it.

Another observation here is that you can achieve great things when you commit to the cause and treat each opportunity with respect. I won’t go too deep into some of the conversations I have with Drew about his current basketball goals, but I can assure you that winning isn’t something that is not in his mind at all times. In fact, I think it is fair to say that although he has been an extremely talented athlete for many years dating back to his days in the University of Villanova, his attitude towards the game and goals is unrivalled. These qualities don’t stop at sport, Drew is just as dedicated in his family life and friendships. I mean he is one of the few people who call to actually see how you are doing with no strings attached.

Many reach high levels of success and get complacent and for lack of a better word: content. At this moment and time I believe it is important to highlight a few attributes that Drew has made habitual that can help you also along your journey towards peak performance.

1. Attitude

2. Consistency

3. Effort

These are what I believe transform talent into character, and potential into legacy. Maybe I am biased as Drew is a friend, maybe these attributes don’t lead to victory, but, I dare you to try to adopt them into your life and career and see what results you get.

Oh, I forgot to mention he has lost count of how many championships he has won.

I asked him why and he said ‘I’m focused on the next one’

Now would be an appropriate time to end and say:

This is not how your story ends;
