Civic engagement is about finding a cause that you can support. Some people dedicate their lives to helping others because they recognize the need. However, it can also benefit the person that’s giving their time. It can actually reinvigorate you and fight burnout. There are good reasons why you should get involved in a cause that matters to you.

One of the reasons why some people don’t participate in different causes is because they don’t have the emotional or physical drive needed. Interestingly, when you get involved in community programs that serve others, it can reinvigorate you by changing your mental and physical health. It’s not until you push through any feelings of apathy that you start to experience the benefits. In fact, the Journal of Psychophysiology has reported that people who support social organizations experience coronary heart issues at a lower rate. They also say it can reduce depression and boost your self-esteem.

A great way to fight burnout is to have a purpose. Civic engagement can help you understand that you are needed in this world. One of the benefits of living a more purposeful life is living a longer life. Even helping family members and friends can extend your lifespan. Simply put, people who help others live longer and more vibrant lives. A purposeful life can change how you feel about waking up every morning. It gives you something to look forward to when you otherwise might not feel like you have a reason to exist. It can give you a sense of belonging.

Many people say “it’s better to give than receive.” This is philosophically and technically true. Why? Because giving changes your brain chemistry. It’s the reason why you feel good when giving something to someone. Your brain produces oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin, which are all chemicals known to make you feel happy. The same applies to connecting with other people. This is because we all need human connection to have a fulfilled life.

Although the amount of time one person needs to spend connecting with others can be much less than someone else, it’s still a necessity. We all want to feel like we belong somewhere and have something to offer.
