Marketing can be a tricky concept, especially if you are not directly involved with the company but need to convince consumers to buy their product or service.

It helps to think of marketing as the same as being a stepfather. The company, service or product may not be your own, but you should treat it like it is. You need to care for it, make sure that it has what it needs to grow, and stand behind it as long as it is in your care. When you begin to look at marketing in that frame of mind, it makes it much easier to care for the product you are trying to promote and do whatever you can to see that it is a success.    

How to Apply the Stepfather Rule to Your Marketing Tactics

 If you are a parent or step-parent, it shouldn’t be difficult to apply this go-to marketing strategy to your everyday tasks. But if you aren’t a parent or could simply use some additional tips, here are some things to remember when providing your marketing services to a new company.

Commit to the Brand

You will want to commit yourself to the brand in order to get the best results out of your marketing strategies. You need to care about the product or service you are building up and believe in it or else your advertising efforts will not be as good as you expected. Take the time to learn more about the brand and what they have to offer their customers. How can their product or service make their customers’ lives easier? Will it help them save time or money?

What Approach Would You Take?

Using the stepfather strategy, what approach would you take if this were your stepchild instead of just another marketing project or business strategy? What would you say or do to ensure everyone knew how special they were? You would want to share their special talents and let others know about all their good qualities. Now apply that same approach to the product or service you are marketing.

Are You Proud to be Associated with the Brand?

Do you feel like the brand can make a positive difference in the everyday lives of consumers? Are they involved in worthy causes such as manufacturing eco-friendly products? If there is something about the product or service that you can find pride in personally, then you shouldn’t have any trouble speaking positively about it. Therefore, when looking for new clients to work with, be sure to consider those that you would be proud to represent.

If Not, How Can Your Marketing Improve or Change That?

Look for all the positive aspects the brand, product or service has to offer. Focus on those areas or consult with the brand and find out what improvements they plan to work on for the future. Paint the brand in a positive light to help encourage their customers to come back to them in the future.
