I think that having a diverse team is part of our culture in Miami and the clientele is a melting pot of people from different backgrounds. It’s what makes South Florida so beautiful. I also think that clients want to feel that they can relate to you. In addition, they bring unique and different perspectives to the table. You learn about various cultures. It’s the way that it should be and I’m proud to say that I have a diverse staff here — it’s the new normal.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. April Patterson (Dr. Patty) of Dr. Patty’s Dental Spa.

In addition to being one of the first dental spas in the country, her dental boutique specializes in relaxation dentistry which aims to remove the fear and anxiety associated with dental visits by creating a welcoming and relaxing environment for clients.

Dr. Patty employs a “Director of Client Happiness” on staff to act as a concierge for clients, tending to their every need from limo transportation to and from appointment to making lunch or dinner reservations.

The jarring sounds of buzzing drills have been replaced with nearly noiseless, electronic tools and further silenced by relaxing music available in surround sound and via complimentary earbuds. The malodorous scent of chemicals has been replaced by aromatherapy diffused through the office ventilation system and the use of odor-free, eco-friendly products.

Her aesthetician is available for vampire facelifts, microblading and a wide variety of facials including microdermabrasion, high frequency, hydrogen facials, clay peels and an aqua marine facial peel with caviar featuring a unique blend of lactic, glycolic and the infusions of the sea combine with the latest advanced technology for visibly smoother, firmed and toned skin.

Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique features the latest dental technology on the market. Dental procedures are televised; digital photography and intra-oral cameras are used to give clients an up-close look into their mouths for the early detection of cavities; the Digital Smile Makeover allows clients to leave with a real photo of what their new smile would look like after a cosmetic treatment; computerized shade matching, state-of-the-art sterilization room open for client viewing and advanced laser oral cancer screenings and digital x-rays, which tremendously reduce radiation exposure up to 90 percent are just a few of the advances in oral health care utilized by Dr. Patty and her board certified team of dental hygienists.

In addition to her impressive work as a female, black-owned business, Dr. Patty is an active member of the Fort Lauderdale community. She actively participates with Women In Distress of Broward County, the Humane Society of Broward County, Emerge Broward and the Museum of Discovery and Science.

Thank you for joining us Dr. Patty. Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Iwas pretty young when I decided that I wanted to be a dentist. I had a cousin who had braces during my youth and I could see her smile transform as she got her braces off. I remember her “tooth journey” and it inspired me.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

I had never thought of opening my own practice until I was working with a company that had bad management. There was an employee at the company who shared with me that they would one day want to work for me. That was the moment that I knew that I could be a leader and that I could do this myself. I think that good relationships are key to a successful business as you have to surround yourself with people that you trust and respect.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

While I felt like an expert in the world of dentistry and I felt like I was savvy with marketing, there are so many parts of owning a business that I had to learn. For example, I knew nothing about the financial part of running a company. There were a lot of funny moments and mistakes, but everything happens for a reason.

Can you share three reasons with our readers about why it’s really important for a business to have a diverse executive team?

I think that having a diverse team is part of our culture in Miami and the clientele is a melting pot of people from different backgrounds. It’s what makes South Florida so beautiful. I also think that clients want to feel that they can relate to you. In addition, they bring unique and different perspectives to the table. You learn about various cultures. It’s the way that it should be and I’m proud to say that I have a diverse staff here — it’s the new normal.

Can you recommend three things the community/society/the industry can do help address the root of the diversity issues in executive leadership?

1. I think that making people of color have the opportunity to get their words out there through the media is important.

2. Some companies are creating new positions to help raise awareness, initiatives, etc. so that this topic is top of company values.

3. Make it a part of your brand. For example, upgrade your images to include diverse people of different backgrounds in your social media feed, marketing images, advertisements, etc.

How do you define “Leadership”? Can you explain what you mean or give an example?

Leadership is all about inspiring people and making people want to do better and reach the next level with their goals. I also think that part of being a leader is to provide resources to those people who may look to you. Reach out to them and help them with advice.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each.

I wish someone had told me that I could open my own business. I’ll never forget being in dental school and I was in a business class and the teacher asked us if anyone planned on opening their office. I had no idea that it was even a possibility for me. I also realized that I could create a place that I wanted to go to, which was my own style. I wish someone had told me that the sky was the limit. I made it come true. I always try to avoid push back when it comes to my business.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

Everyday is a new day and anything is possible. I say that to my daughter everyday and I truly believe that it is the key to life and the key to success.

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. 🙂

Oprah! Her journey is so inspiring. She never compared herself to anyone. She held her head high and focused on her goals with grace and humility.
