Health and lifestyle magazines, television shows, documentaries and even podcasts; basically the mass media channels have always drilled into our heads one and only one message; that being fat is not good and that anyone who is fat should lose weight.
In fact, some of the most popular high fashion brands in the world of fashion have actually stated that they don’t produce plus size clothing, as plus size women should ideally lose weight and fit into their perceived “normal sizes”.
Perhaps it is time to gain some more perspective in this regard.
Latest studies have proven that it is actually possible to be overweight and yet be healthy. Apparently there is a particular sub-category of obesity called Metabolically Healthy Obesity or MHO. People who belong to this group generally do not develop risks for adverse health issues that are typically associated with obesity.
What this essentially implies is that the term “obesity” is no longer restricted to one outcome. It is a health condition that can have more than one possible outcome. For the same reason, everyone who is overweight is not always unhealthy.
That should be proof enough for the lifestyle and fashion brands to start taking a more open minded approach in their ad campaigns. Given that a majority of the population of the world is in fact on the bigger side, it would only do them good to create more body positive commercials and produce plus size fashion in different sizes as well.
Fortunately there are many brands that do consider plus size fashion and some that sell plus size fashion exclusively. CEO and Co-founder of an Exclusive Plus Size Womenswear Brand named Regal Gold Boutique stated “.. the fashion industry as a whole have been trying and failing at excluding curvier women’s fashion. What they fail to realise is plus size fashion is the NEW Norm. The sooner they get over that and accept it the better..” Statistics on a years to year basis, are showing an exponential increase in plus size fashion sales and the massive increase in demand that the industry cannot keep up with.
Even when it comes to health and nutrition, people who gain even the tiniest bit of weight are always scrambling to reduce those numbers on their weigh scale. And ironically enough, only a very small percentage of people who actually maintain diets end up maintaining their lost weight too. This essentially puts them in a cycle of continuously losing and gaining weight, which can be quite harmful for the body.
While unusual weight gain definitely is something that
needs to checked, what people need to realize is that there is no need to rush
and get back to the imposed ideal measurements of the society for every slight
What should also stop is perhaps the immediate judgement and labelling. Thanks to the media, both mass and social, people tend to judge and flag someone as unhealthy just because they are bigger than the rest or just because they asked for a size 16 instead of say a size 10 in clothing. As proven scientifically, it is very much possible for someone to be big or overweight and still be healthy in the same way it’s possible for someone to be thin and unhealthy.
It is high time people came to terms with the fact that it is ok to be overweight. Health is a result of lifestyle and habits and it has little to do with body size.
