Can you recall one moment that made you feel seen? Maybe it was a call you received from an old friend when you were in a dark place, or a “well done!” from a boss when you were doubting yourself. Or even just a passing smile from a stranger, a rare human connection made among the bustle of the everyday. There’s a lot to be said for small gestures of heartfelt kindness. They’re often underrated and underestimated — grand gestures get all the credit! — but in the moment, even small efforts can be incredibly powerful.

Here at Thrive Global, we can’t stop talking about this touching video, “Sharing Meals with the Homeless,” which shows the beauty of small gestures at work. This is the story of one woman, Jan Shepherd, who decided to start sharing a meal with people her city of Santa Monica who are homeless. She extended her hand out to those who are all too often passed by and ignored, and we’re inspired by her sincere act of good. “The stories I have heard during these meals have been heartbreaking and inspirational in equal measure,” she says.

If you’re feeling inspired after watching, share your own moment that has made you feel seen or heard, using the tag #DoSomethingHeartfelt or tagging @DoSomethingHeartfelt. You can also send the video to a colleague who needs a pick me up. Who knows — you might end up making someone’s day!

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
