Are you really just like your father or mother? Just as we receive physical genetic markers from our birth parents, such as hair colour or height, we also inherit their energetic characteristics.

These genetic beliefs are the things we’ve learned from our parents and ancestors, through spoken vibrations and non-physical forms. These beliefs aren’t just things we’ve learned in this lifetime, but genetically and energetically, they’re things we’ve absorbed and taken on.

Someone might say to you, “Your grandmother acted just like that!” or “Your grandfather used to say the exact same thing!” There are places and spaces in our human experiences where we’ve simply taken on other people’s “stuff.”

Energetic cords

Scientists have found that memories can be passed on through our RNA (Ribonucleic acid) as a form of “epigenetic inheritance.”

During one study, several mice were put in a chamber with the strong scent of cherry blossoms, and then given an electric shock. They soon associated the smell of the flowering buds with pain. Over time, generations of their offspring were also born with that fear.

Even when we leave the nest, we take our family’s physical, mental and emotional programs with us. The buttons once pushed by Mom or Dad become a manifest loop: we don’t feel valued at work, we create disharmony in relationships or we can’t handle our own finances.

Another way to look at these ties is as literal cords: In utero, an umbilical cord feeds us, giving us life and keeping us safe. When we emerge into this life and that cord is physically severed, we begin to form energetic cords of another kind. These energetic ties are meant to nourish us, creating a flow or balance within this new energetic ecosystem that helps us know our place and validates our newly forming belief systems.

But as we grow, we often realize that these cords have created dependence or co-dependence. Instead of feeling mutually supported, we get caught up in the trauma and drama of the other person we’re connected to. We become tangled up in shared history, repeating patterns and wounds. That’s because, subconsciously, our energy is feeding a belief system put in place long ago.

This is when we can choose to find our own light and free ourselves of the ties that bind. We can choose to open our hearts and free ourselves from any cords or programs, discovering space to unify and amplify the love of who we are. We can feel love for ourselves and connect to the source energy that’s the creative force behind everyone and everything.

Make the choice to forgive and let go

Too often, we can’t forgive people who’ve hurt us in the past. We put the need to be righteous above our desire to be happy. Energetically, we hold onto the cords passed down from our families, believing that we’re not ready to break. Like security blankets, these cords weigh us down and keep us snared in trauma and drama. But they also keep us safe.

Still: What if forgiveness meant you could consciously create anything you desired? What if happiness were a choice we could make, and that choice was enough to clear our energetic spaces of everyone else’s “stuff”? Are you ready for that responsibility? Are you ready to love yourself?

Here’s how to free yourself from the cords connecting you to your family and live in your own light:

Change your “lens”

Through the lens of forgiveness, we can allow ourselves to be who we are and allow everyone else to be who they are. We can begin to view our family members as having their own presence.

Realize that they’re on their journey, just as you’re on yours. Extend this idea beyond your own family to the larger family of humankind—can you see everyone as Source sees them? Are you willing to allow that every person on this planet is a living, breathing belief system, created through their own history, and realize that in this truth, you can free yourself to write your own programs?

Question yourself

Ask yourself, “What would it feel like to have the most amazing, giving, wealthy, nurturing and infinitely amazing family ever?”

As much as you can, let go of whatever story you’ve created around your family. Start to play pretend and recreate your past. What might it have felt like to have been born into a loving, supportive and nurturing world, where you were uplifted and encouraged at every step?

How would that feel? Tune into that feeling.

Stop the old “tapes”

If the old tapes start to play, tell them to go take a nap. This is your space and your choice. You can release every single cord in your life by understanding that you’re Divine Love—a living, individuated expression of that spiritual energy and love in action.

Feel what it’d be like to be welcomed into an eternal state of connection and love, free of any limitations, where you’d be able to choose whatever you desire, and where every feeling, thought or emotion would be birthed from this space of love.

It doesn’t matter if you’re seven or 107 years old. You’re always a child at heart, born purely of Spirit, no matter what the old family drama or stories hold, and no matter how far down you may have buried your essence or forgotten your Light. You can still escape those cords and tap into what you truly are.
