Celebrating the mother’s who lost so that others may gain

Celebrating the mother’s who lost so that others may gain

For years — through some tears — we prayed and we prayed,
Then we got to change diapers because of a choice that you made,

A choice I can’t fathom — one my mind can’t imagine,
But I believe it was born out of love and compassion;

And you made it — and through it you made me a daddy,
And I took your sacrifice and I loved it — like madly!

But I never lost sight of the loss that you suffered,
So that I could be father and Laura could be mother;

I think of you often — when milestones happen,
When the girls are on stage and the parents are clapping;

When times tables are learned and when grades are completed,
Or when boo-boos pop up and mommy hugs are needed;

Things like learning to read and to write and to talk,
Or rolling from belly and learning to walk;

All the questions that rise, the yes, no’s and maybe’s,
And the ones about you — and about tummy babies;

Questions about family and the colors of skin,
It’s so hard not to feel all the loss in this win;

No this awesome, incredible thing called “my life,”
Was born from a place full of pain, hurt and strife;

And I never forget that my advances and chances,
Came to life while yours died through dire circumstances;

So on the eve of the day that we celebrate mothers,
I say a prayer and remember that there is… another.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
