As a part of my series about “5 Lifestyle Tweaks That Will Dramatically Improve One’s Wellbeing”, I had the pleasure of interviewing Marlene Vargas and Alex Naranjo, co-founders of House of Intuition. Marlene and Alex are the founders of the metaphysical retailer, House of Intuition. They were inspired to create House of Intuition to transform the business of metaphysical shops by providing access to the healing tools that guide people along their spiritual journey. As spiritual seekers themselves, they use HOI as an outlet to share the magic that profoundly transformed their lives.
Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the story about how you first got involved in wellness?
In2010 when the market crashed, we were devastated and seeking to have clarity for direction and understanding. We both gravitated towards more than just religion for answers and always felt connected to an esoteric practice. Growing up in religious households, we were afraid to question what we were taught growing up, so it was not until we were older and in a situation of extreme need to create a better life for ourselves that we actually started to seek and explore outside of religion. This is when we found wellness, self-love and magic.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
When we first started our journey, we were unaware of the flow of energy within our actual bodies and how energy healings or crystals can affect our physical bodies. It was a cathartic experience where we physically purged: throwing up, outburst of tears or extreme fatigue. Needless to say, we were a hot mess until we were able to harmoniously connect these energies or release them with techniques we did not understand we had the power to do. We are all such powerful beings and we had no idea with focus, concentration, consistency, and a whole lot of self-work that we could manifest a more meaningful, balanced life.
Can you share a story with us about the most humorous mistake you made when you were first starting? What lesson or take-away did you learn from that?
When we first opened House of Intuition, we actually did not want to have a retail store. We were only interested in changing the stereotype of psychics and to help one tap into their intuition. For the first eight months this was our firm decision until our community continued to ask for more spiritual tools. We then had this aha moment where we realized that our mission was to help our community find themselves in their own journey, whether they are spiritual or not, have a belief system or not, religious or not. We enhance the spiritual foundation with rituals that revolve around self-care, healing and empowerment just as we experienced ourselves in 2009 and 2010 as we were rebuilding our lives.
Can you share with our readers a bit about why you are an authority in the wellness field? In your opinion, what is your unique contribution to the world of wellness?
Our mission from the start has been to help others feel hope when they feel hopeless, to feel powerful when they feel defeated, and to bring intention within when seeking outside of themselves. Furthermore, we come from a place of inclusivity and as LGBT founders ourselves, it was paramount for us not to exclude anyone from their religious beliefs, organized traditional practices or financial differences. We built House of Intuition to welcome all. This has given us the opportunity to work with so many people by staying open and non-conforming.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
Alex and I have not had an actual individual guide us along our way to success in this journey. However, we have received tons of support within our community, employees, and family that we are grateful for. We have grown spiritually within ourselves and all these mentioned have helped us evolve into better human beings. We are also very grateful for our spiritual guides and ancestors. Without the guidance, protection and connection we have with other beings outside of this world we know our success on this journey would have been very difficult to accomplish.
Ok thank you for all that. Now let’s move to the main focus of our interview. We all know that it’s important to eat more vegetables, eat less sugar, exercise more, and get better sleep etc. But while we know it intellectually, it’s often difficult to put it into practice and make it a part of our daily habits. In your opinion what are the 3 main blockages that prevent us from taking the information that we all know, and integrating it into our lives?
In our opinion in decision making for some of us humans it is difficult for us to make changes when there are options for us not to have to. Spiritual or wellness will take form quicker when we have no option without a big consequence. Like illness, separation, death, etc. is when we make changes and large shifts in our lives.
Can you please share your “5 Non-Intuitive Lifestyle Tweaks That Will Dramatically Improve One’s Wellbeing”? (Please share a story or an example for each, and feel free to share ideas for mental, emotional and physical health.)
- Dedicate time for your intuition — This is your guide in life. We understand everyone is busy but when you carve out time in your day to listen to your intuition, be it through journaling, meditation or in the shower, you have the opportunity to tune into your higher intelligence.
- Set intentions — This is the first step to manifesting what you desire and setting the universe in motion. Intent has the power to change your life.
- State your daily affirmations — This mindful practice is a transformative tool to manifest everything you desire. Some examples are “I am strong”, “I am powerful”, “I am loved”…
- Clear your chakras — A person can keep their chakras habitually clear by doing an assortment of metaphysical practices daily, there are thousands of ways, but let’s discuss one that is open and easy for all to access. Meditation helps you to stay grounded and focused, it will help to ease overthinking and balance the physical and mental states. Meditation can be done hundreds of ways as well; you can do a working meditation such as walking, yoga, martial arts, art in all forms, using sound bowls to clear your energy, writing, and breathwork. The more you practice meditation the easier it will be for you to access that in the zone feeling and being present.

You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. We resonate with her message that “if we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed.”
You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂
