I feel like healing ourselves through our health and feeling beauty, we are more confident and eager to spread goodness. As we feel better with more energy, we can take on more service for those around us who are in need.

As a part of my series about the women in wellness, I had the pleasure of interviewing Shiva Rose. A decade ago, after suffering from life-threatening autoimmune disorders, Hollywood actress and host of Bluprint’s wellness beauty series, DIY Spa Day, Shiva Rose set out to discover a more holistic way to natural health and beauty. Through her desire of celebrating authentic, healthy living without sacrificing beauty and glamour, Shiva Rose developed her own nontoxic, all-natural skin-care line and holistic lifestyle website, The Local Rose. She has not only healed her life, but has also become a leader and entrepreneur in the world of all-natural beauty and lifestyle. She’s a Kardashian favorite and the author of Whole Beauty, a complete guide to revitalizing your life.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?

I started my site The Local Rose ten years ago when I was healing myself from a divorce and autoimmune conditions. The site is dedicated to a more holistic approach to living with healthy food recipes, natural beauty, and spirituality. Five years ago, I started my skin care line Shiva Rose to bring nontoxic, yet powerful, products to women everywhere.

Can you share your top three “lifestyle tweaks” that you believe will help support people’s journey towards better wellbeing?

Eat as many organic foods as you can. Drink clean water form non-plastic vessels. Make tonics from herbs and plants. Add healthy fats for skin and hair.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?

I feel that when you are on the right path for your authentic self, there are always interesting things that show up. When I ask for signs, I usually get them right away. When I am in sync with my spirit and source, I see results in every way.

Can you share a story about the biggest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

I am a self-taught entrepreneur, so I have had many mistakes along the way. A most recent one was not checking proofs on boxes being made for a new product. After the thousands of boxes showed up, I realized and was devastated. Not only due to the cost, but also, the use of paper. I did manage to reuse them, so somehow our mistakes can make us think outside of the box and creatively.

When it comes to health and wellness, how is the work you are doing helping to make a bigger impact in the world?

I feel like healing ourselves through our health and feeling beauty, we are more confident and eager to spread goodness. As we feel better with more energy, we can take on more service for those around us who are in need.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I came up with a lot of other women who started businesses in LA in the last ten years. I see them as all inspiring. Kundalini Yoga has helped me be more focused and disciplined. Rama Studio in Venice and the teachers there have been a beacon of sorts. I also feel I got some help more from the natural world. Being alone with the trees, the plants, and animals have been the best guides.

If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of wellness to the most amount of people, what would that be?

I feel there is a movement under foot. The Goddess movement is growing strong as is herbalism. We are taking our health and spiritual well-being in our own hands after generations of it being buried.

Do you have a “girl-crush” in this industry? If you could take one person to brunch, who would it be? (Let another “woman in wellness” know that you respect her as a teacher and guide! )

I don’t really have a girl crush unless it’s Rosemarie Swift from RMS. I also love my friend Nadine Artemis, and her work with her line Living Libations.

Sustainability, veganism, mental health and environmental changes are big topics at the moment. Which one of these causes is dearest to you, and why?

I think we need to realize that if we want a better world and to heal the earth we need to stop dividing ourselves with all the various groups and movements. They should all be united to better the climate situation as that is the most crucial thing we need to focus on. I believe strongly on Regenerative Farming and that we all want to connect to the divine source of all things.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
