Anya Thakur: The art of activism as a global women’s advocate and the founder of ShePower with MetoWe
“You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right,” are the words of famed civil rights activist Rosa Parks. And as she defined our history, I am proud to empower and educate an emerging generation and her words have become my mantra.
I witnessed UN Women Global Ambassador Emma Watson publicly call herself a feminist and bring modern meaning to the word as I watched her give a speech on HeforShe.
Asian-American actress Lana Condor of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before shared she does acting not for herself, but to be the person she needed as a child.
Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu replied, “More please!” on the red carpet when asked about Asian-American representation.
Malala Yousafzai imparted advice to teens like me. “We should not wait to change the world,” she said. And I am not waiting.
Hearing their words, I understood the excitement rushing through me, emotions palpable, and what it meant to be fearless and see myself in the moment, fragments and fractals of my identity reflected in someone whose soul matched my own.
An “Anyatha” moment was how I described my ‘ah-hah!’ moments of wonder, inspiration, realization, and actualization for representation and empowerment. My platform is one intended to enact social change, share and uplift women’s voices and champion causes important to me such as Asian-American representation and visibility. I share stories of substance and purpose and lead the way for even more of these stories to be added to the rich, moving tapestry of our great globe.
And all the places we could go together, we went, as I shared my experiences empowering and uplifting women and girls in Delhi, Mumbai, Munipur, Coimbatore and other parts of India or right here in Dallas through ShePower in partnership with MetoWe, speaking to an immense audience on behalf of a United Nations foundation to covering red carpet movements such as #TIMES UP or the Crazy Rich Asians premiere. This incredible journey is only starting and it’s one I am forever grateful I embarked on and to the tremendous network of readers continually support me.
As I’ve always said, you, my incredible friend, are powerful beyond measure and will surpass everyone’s expectations, including your own.
Here’s hoping an ‘Anyatha’ moment strikes you today and sets you on the cusp of something new. Maybe you’ll discover one right here.
