We are extremely excited to be chatting with CMO of Inertial Media and car marketing expert, Antony Schreurs. Thank you for joining us Antony! Let’s get started.
Q: Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
Antony: Well, my grandfather is involved in advertising and I really look up to him in so many ways I always wanted to be like him and I am very creative So I felt marketing or advertising is something that I could really get into. And when my business partner Tex Keith and I met he thought I had a lot of valuable perspective and that I could provide some real value in the field of marketing. I also had a background in sales so I had an understanding of customers and the psychology behind advertising.
Q: Can you share the most interesting story that has happened to you since you first started?
Antony: Hmm I would say when we drove 17 total hours to get a pot for a restaurant who was our client. Basically a restaurant we worked with needed to get a giant tin pot for baking which sped up the process for making baked goods by about 2 hours. We had to go all the way to central Oregon and back. My business partner and I did this to help out the staff the integrity of the restaurant is what mattered to us most. I remember thinking to myself “What other marketers would do something like this?” I think the answer to this is probably no one else and I take a lot of pride in the fact that the people who work with me also have the sam attitude of going beyond the call of duty.
Q: Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you’ve made so far?
Antony: There are a lot of things that I think make my company stand out. The unique content we publish and the value that we provide to our clients is unparalleled in our field for small businesses. An interesting story? Well when we first started working with a Mexican restaurant named Esmeralda’s you know we would let the owner know that we were there for him for a lot of different things and he was also a friend of ours and he would ask us to roll burritos with him and we did it. I hated it but I always said to myself that I would do whatever my client needed and I stand by that to this day. I’ll be honest thought I haven’t rolled burritos in awhile. Haha
Q: What are some tips you have for colleagues in your industry?
Antony: Make sure to have time for relaxation and family. During the week grind it out do what ever you have to do to accomplish your weekly goals, but on the weekends make some time for your family and friends. No matter how much financial or professional success you have without friends and family it doesn’t matter. I would also recommend getting a team of people around you who have like minded goals. When you’re not feeling well and you need some help you can come to them and always get some motivation or much needed perspective.
Q: Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank for helping you get to where you are now?
Antony: Yeah absolutely I would like to give a big shout out to my mom and my dad and to the rest of my friends and family you guys know who you are. And I would like to give a special thanks to those who are no longer with us Mike Spizer, David Garcia, and my grandpa. Everyone I gave a shout out to has a heart of gold and I would not be who I am without them. My mom is the person I most want to succeed for she has always supported me and even though she never made huge amounts of money when I was growing up I always had what I wanted and she’s simply the best.
Q: How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
Antony: Well with the mild success I do have I try and stay humble and instill that in people around me. I also try and inspire those around me whenever I can. People will DM me and ask me questions and I try and assist them to the best of my ability with whatever they need help with. One thing I take a lot of pride in is being able to mend fences with people I didn’t get along with and I have been able to do that successfully. I try and assist anyone I can.
Q: What’s your favorite quote? Can you share a story?
Antony: There are so many quotes that I love and have helped me one of which is from Rocky the movie character “It’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” This quote really resonates with me because so many people think oh success just happens and people who are successful never lose and there is nothing farther from the truth. I have had more failure in life than success and all those failures in my life made me who I am today. People have to stop being so afraid of failure and start living and experiencing life. I’ll also share a quote that I came up with that I think provides a lot of value “The best at anything neglects nothing”. This means you can’t be the best at something until you become proficient in every facet of your field. Many people in life are ok with being good at some stuff and settling with the natural ability they might have, that’s not the way to go. Michael Jordan didn’t become the greatest basketball player ever by settling with whatever natural ability he had. If you want to beat your competition you have to be willing to make sacrifices they won’t.
Q: What are five things you wished someone told you when you first started?
Antony: My five tips are network whenever you can, be open minded, always strive to learn new things, short term success is overrated, and lastly learn how to manage money. Networking is vital in business and most people in business do not know how to do it properly. The best clients I have ever gotten were as a result of networking and many people share the same sentiment as I do. Being open minded is incredibly important and this is coming from someone who is very stubborn. The practice of being open minded is something that should be practiced. Part of being a great marketer is being open minded and having a huge diversification of ideas. Learning is a huge part of life, I heard a quote along the lines of when you stop learning you start dying and I think this is true in a metaphorical sense more so than a literal sense. Think about this away if you aren’t willing to learn and adapt in your industry someone else will and you obviously won’t die but your presence in your industry will die off and you don’t need me to tell you that you don’t want that to happen. Short term success feels awesome there isn’t many better feeling than getting a new client! But you shouldn’t get too happy I don’t care if you signed a $10,000 contract don’t be a short term thinker your favorite client should be the next one! Money management is something that took me awhile to get better at and I am still improving on it. Early on I bought so many dumb items and clothes it is nuts I look back and shake my head, but I have gotten better at it and look to start investing money sooner than later! Don’t get me wrong I still have fun and spend money on certain items but just keep it to a minimum.
