It might sound predictable but, the thing I carry in my heart about the US are all the people I met and all the people I didn’t have a chance to meet. My year abroad is a mosaic of new faces: faces of people who didn’t know me at first but grew to consider me as their own child, their own sister, faces of people I wanted to get to know through life stories and culture. People who were also curious and excited to listen to and understand my story. But, apart from the gratitude I feel towards my American family and all those who helped me feel at home, I can now picture another huge mosaic made of unknown faces, the ones I tried to capture with my camera, who indirectly guided me and showed me the true colours of their nation. While I tried to adjust to my new life in the US I became aware that the most important thing was not trying to get used to my new country. It was about understanding, understanding the strangers who had become family in just a few weeks, it was about understanding my new friends at school, as well as all the incredible people who’s lives intersect ours every day.
Quale l’aspetto degli USA che ti è piaciuto di più Ambra?
La risposta può sembrare scontata, ma nel cuore porto con me tutte le perosne che ho avuto la possibilità di incontrare e tutte le altre che non ho avuto modo di conoscere. Il mio anno all’estero è un mosaico di volti nuovi: visi che non mi conoscevano ma che hanno finito per considerarmi come una figlia, una sorella. Volti di persone che volevo conoscere attraverso storie e cultura. Persone che erano altresì curiose e invogliate ad ascoltare e capire la mia storia. Ma, a parte la gratitudine che provo verso la mia famiglia americana e tutti coloro che hanno contribuito a farmi sentire a casa, a distanza di tempo riesco ad immaginare un mosaico fatto di volti sconosciuti, gli stessi che ho provato ad immortalare con la mia macchina fotografica. Sono loro ad avermi mostrato indirettamente i veri colori della loro nazione. Il mio viaggio si è basato sulla comprensione, sul capire gli “sconosciuti” che in poche settimane erano diventati famiglia, sul capire i miei nuovi amici a scuola e tutte le persone straordinarie che ogni giorno attraversano, seppur per poco, le nostre vite.

Which aspect of the USA did you like least?
When we left for Italy they told us to try not to think of our experiences as “bad”: there is no good or bad, there is just “different”. This is the motto of the AFS exchange student program which I tried to keep in mind throughout the year and during the difficult moments. Something I had trouble understanding was how history was taught in school. The education system is very different from the Italian one. There are pros and cons in both. I did not like the fact that in high school world history is only taught in one year and in a very generic way. The approach is analytical and focuses on dates and events more than on cause and effect. Since I consider history at the base of our awareness of the present, I think it is important to go in depth of the subject by using a critical thinking approach, as opposed to an analytical method.

Quando siamo partiti dall’Italia ci hanno consigliato di cercare di non guardare alle esperienze che avremmo fatto come “cattive esperienze”: non esiste buono o cattivo, esiste solamente “diverso”. Questo è il motto dell’ Associazione AFS per il programma di scambio che ho tenuto a mente durante il mio anno all’estero e nei momenti di difficoltà. Una cosa che ho faticato a capire negli USA è stato il modo in cui si insegna Storia a scuola. Il sistema scolastico è molto diverso da quello italiano. Ci sono pro e contro in entrambi. Non mi è piaciuto per esempio il fatto che la Storia del mondo fosse concentrata in un solo anno accademico e che venisse insegnata in modo generico. L’approccio era analitico e poneva più enfasi sulle date e sugli accadimenti piuttosto che su causa ed effetto. Visto che considero la Storia alla base della nostra consapevolezza rispetto al presento, credo sia importante approfondire la materia utilizzando un approccio che favorisce il pensiero critico invece di quello analitico.

If you could have chosen two things to take back to Italy from the USA, what would they have been?
The first “thing” I would definitely take back from the US is my American family, that’s for sure! But, focusing more on American culture and identity I would take back the concept of diversity, Americans know so well. I loved how different people with different stories came together in the same city, in the same school. I loved how people travel whenever they can, how they identify themselves with so many different places and so many different cultures. I saw how in most cases, especially in high school, people are free to express themselves and be themselves. In Italy this is difficult due to the fear of being judged. I met people who radically shaped and changed my point of view. I learned to take nothing for granted. Sometimes, in Italy, we teenagers do. For example I met students that worked all afternoon after seven hours of school. In Italy this is unusual.
Se avessi potuto riportare in Italia con te due cose dagli USA, cosa avresti riportato?
La prima ” cosa” che avrei riportato dagli USA è sicuramente la mia famiglia americana. Questo è sicuro! Tuttavia, se considero quelle che sono la cultura e l’identità americana, avrei riportato con me il concetto di diversità che gli americani capiscono così bene. Ho tanto apprezzato come persone diverse tra loro con vissuti completamente divergenti condividessero e coabitassero le stesse città, le stesse scuole. Ho potuto notare come tutti amano viaggiare, come ogni momento libero è una occasione per andare a visitare posti diversi. E’ stato bello osservare il modo in cui le persone si identificano in luoghi e culture di ogni genere. Nella maggior parte dei casi, ovunque, anche a scuola esiste la possibilità di esprimere se stessi, di essere se stessi. In Italia questo è difficile perchè in qualche modo abbiamo sempre paura del giudizio altrui. Ho incontrato persone che hanno plasmato e cambiato radicalmente il mio modo di pensare. Ho imparato a non dare nulla per scontato. Per esempio, ho conosciuto studenti, come me, che lavoravano dopo essere stati a scuola tutto il giorno. In Italia questo è raro.

What did you miss most about Italy, about your hometown Fermo?
What I missed about Italy during my year abroad is a different kind of “maturity” I somehow feel I share with my Italian friends. Studying subjects like Greek, Latin or Philosophy all day makes it natural for us to end up talking about many different topics, from ethics to current events. This happened less with my American friends. So I would certainly introduce the study of philosophy, history of art and a thousand of others fascinating “humanistic” subjects in the American high school curriculum.
Another thing I would bring to the US from Italy are town squares, or simply public outdoor spaces where people can meet and be together. I love the huge American parks (another thing that I miss so much). However, growing up between the little cobble-stone streets of my Italian town helped me realize how important it is for a child to have a safe space to play alone and free with friends. Had I not had this I would be a totally different person today because my childhood and my life would have been completely different.
Cosa ti è mancato di più dell’Italia, della tua città di Fermo?
Ciò che mi è mancato dell’Italia durante il mio anno all’estero è stata la “maturità” che in qualche modo sento di condividere con i miei amici italiani. Quando a scuola studi materie come Greco, Latino e Filosofia è naturale parlare e discutere di tanti argomenti diversi che spaziano dall’etica all’attualità. Questo succedeva meno con i miei amici americani. Per cui, introdurrei molte più materie umanistiche nel piano di studi americano. Introdurrei la Filosofia, Storia dell’Arte e tanti altri argomenti affascinanti come questi.
Un’altra cosa che trapianterei dall’Italia negli Stati Uniti sono le piazze, o più semplicemente spazi pubblici all’aperto dove le persone possono trovarsi e stare insieme. Adoro i grandi parchi americani (sono una delle cose che mi mancano di più). Ma crescere nei borghi della mia città, di Fermo, mi ha aiutato a capire quanto sia importatnte per una bambina o un bambino avere uno spazio dove giocare liberi e in sicurezza insieme ai propri compagni. Se non avessi avuto questa fortuna oggi sarei una persona completamente diversa, perchè la mia infanzia e la mia vita sarebbero state radicamente diverse.
