Kevin Moore was born and raised in Texas. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and then attended law school at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. After law school Kevin initially worked for a law firm, but soon thereafter he opened his own legal practice. The Law Firm of Kevin Moore focuses on injury law with a specific focus on helping clients with Workers’ Compensation issues. He does a lot of pro bono work through free legal clinics.

Kevin is also working on a secondary degree at Vanderbilt University, a Masters of Divinity, American History and Law, and Religion.

Why did you decide to create your own business?

I decided to create my own business for independence and control, so I can do things the way I want to do them, specifically in the way I help clients. I have a vision and certain ways that I like to do things and having my own business gives me the flexibility to be able to do that.What do you love most about the industry you are in?

My work is limited to Workers’ Compensation Law. I really love working with clients and just being able to help them. It sounds corny, but it’s pretty accurate. If you don’t love what you do, you shouldn’t do it.

What keeps you motivated?

What keeps me motivated is the daily strategy that is involved in the work. Every case is different, and every fact scenario is different. The work is always a challenge in regard to trying to take something from an abstract beginning to the end result. For instance, somebody calling and giving me a set of facts, and then looking six months or a year later and seeing the end result of the case being settled, benefits granted, or whatever else we are able to get for the client. It’s not static. It’s very dynamic.

Who has been a role model to you and why?

My father has been a role model to me. He is a physician. He had his own practice for a long time. He was a role model to me in how he treated his patients and so forth. He was an example to me of setting up my own business.

What traits do you possess that make a successful leader?

I have a real strong work ethic and a desire to succeed. I am attentive and I am good at assessing the facts and the law in order to put those pieces together for the benefit of the client. I am very good at reading and picking out what needs attention.

What is one piece of advice that you have never forgotten?

Listen and treat everyone as an equal.

What is the biggest life lesson you have learned?

Rely on yourself. As mentioned before I like to do things my way and have found that I can accomplish anything if I just put my mind to it and stay focused.

Outside of work, what defines you as a person?

Faith and family.

Where do you see you and your company in 5 years?

Exactly what I’m doing now. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing at the level that I can. I’ll continue to broaden some of it.

I would also like to teach. That’s really one of the things I want to do with my Vanderbilt degree. I don’t want to teach in lieu of my legal practice. I just want to teach in conjunction with what I’m doing.

Explain the proudest day of your professional life.

I would probably just say the day I started my practice. I enjoy my work and when I started working for myself I really felt like I was exactly where I wanted to be doing exactly what I wanted to do.
