“A Child Called It” Gave Me the Courage to Tell My Story

Dave Pelzer lifted me out of the abyss and has forever changed the landscape of my heart and soul. His story "A Child Called It" gave me the courage to tell my own story of abuse as a child through the lens of an incest survivor.

It is with immense pride, and with a deep sense of personal honour that I am able to share with all of you today, my amazing interview with Mr. Brave Heart himself, Mr. Dave Pelzer! I was fortunate and blessed to not only interview one of my most intangible mentors, Dave Pelzer, on Living Fearlessly with Lisa McDonald, once…I graciously received the privilege of showcasing and interviewing him twice on the global radio airwaves!

Dave Pelzer is many things to many people. For me personally, he was an anchor that lifted me out of the abyss, when I first came across his heart-wrenching story so many years ago. All of Dave’s books have lined my bookshelves and have been re-read by me on numerous occasions, however, it was namely his book, A Child Called “It,” which deeply penetrated my soul and to this day, has still left an indescribable imprint on every fibre of my being. Dave’s horrendous abuse story as a child (at the hands of his mother) was documented as the worst in California history.

Dave’s shared story, and it non-coincidentally winding up on my radar, was in many ways, what gave me the courage to tell my own story of abuse as a child through the lens of an incest survivor. Dave’s story, coupled with my own, is what propelled me onto the once-upon-a-time vocational path of social services – specifically crisis management at the senior management level. Dave put a voice to much of what I too, had endured emotionally throughout the course of my journey. Dave choosing to be the courageous warrior he was and is, by publicly sharing the sordid and painful details for what was inflicted upon him, empowered me to do exactly the same, especially in knowing that by doing so in both of our cases, it would serve to help others to also heal and to reclaim their own voice.

Dave has shared his story on Oprah, and Larry King Live just to cite a couple of the majorly big syndicated shows; demonstrating the breadth and scope for who else he and his powerful story has resonated with and for how far reaching his story has travelled.

When I became the host of my own radio show/podcast, Living Fearlessly with Lisa McDonald, four years ago, I knew I had to interview Dave so as to publicly thank him and to express to him, the profound impact he has had on me and the profound impact he has also had on the trajectory of my life. Not only was it a serendipitous, surreal, and out of body experience for me to have been afforded the gift of having real life discussions with one of the most extraordinary individuals to have ever played such a pivotal role in the shaping of much of who I am – who I have chosen to want to become and for what I chose to want to amount to in my own life, based upon his most stellar example of humanity…Dave ALSO very generously endorsed my first adult non-fiction book, Living Fearlessly, with such a beautifully written testimonial. Dave has ALSO generously carved out time from his chronically busy life of serving others, to speak with me on the phone, and to provide me with tangible mentorship. This man has forever changed the landscape of my heart and soul. Kindred Spirits! You can listen to the interview here:
