Our ceramic braces should always be clean. It’s not just because you should maintain perfect oral hygiene but also because you will feel more confident. Braces catch stains easily, and they require extra attention to protect your teeth from decay and prevent gum disease. Some of the foods and drinks you take can cause discoloration on the braces, and you have to be extra careful. Afraid to flaunt a smile? Here are seven tips to keep your ceramic braces clean for you to flash a confident smile.

1. Stop Smoking

Smoking is bad for your health, and you have been warned over a thousand times. If you don’t smoke, a friend or relative does, and you can help them change. Apart from what smoking does to your respiratory system, it also affects your teeth and stains your ceramic braces, making them look yellowish.

According to an orthodontists, those stains are hard to remove. So, if you are a smoker and you are planning to get ceramic braces, just quit. You will have saved more than your ceramic braces.

2. Brush Twice a Day and Floss

Brushing your teeth is probably the first cleaning routine your parents taught you. They helped you live a hygienic life. With ceramic braces, continue with the same routine, brushing twice a day and flossing.

Brushing and flossing remove residual food particles that could develop into bacteria. To make flossing a better experience, use a floss thread that has waxed dental floss.

3. Watch What You Put in Your Mouth

The moment you wear ceramics, start checking what’s coming to your mouth. Sugary and starchy foods should be a no-no! Those are the kind of foods that make plaque develop around the brackets and result to gum disease or cavities.

Avoid chewy foods like caramel, corn, and chewing gum which can get stuck easily and are hard to remove. Nuts, popcorn, and ice are also notorious in breaking the brace wires and loosening the brackets. If you have to eat crunchy foods, chop them to small pieces.

4. Avoid Whitening Toothpaste

Yes, don’t use a whitening toothpaste at least for the time being. After you take off the braces, you can go back to your favorite whitening toothpaste.

The whitening toothpaste will not reach the places of your teeth hidden or blocked by the ceramic braces, and so when you finally remove the braces, some dark markings will be left on the teeth.

5. Use a Mouthwash Regularly

There are times you are either too busy, or you are away from your toothbrush. Always rinse your mouth with water after a meal or when you are in the washroom. If you can, always carry your mouth wash along and flush your mouth frequently.

Brush your teeth again when you get back home. A mouthwash helps to take away some of the food remains that attach themselves in your mouth.

6. Never Skip a Check-Up Date

Ceramic braces tend to weaken as time goes by and so it’s essential for them to be maintained. The only way you can do that is by visiting your orthodontist according to schedule.

By doing so, you allow them to make the adjustments as required, and you will be able to maintain stain-free braces.

7. Use a Special wax or Pain Reliever to Sooth the Pain

Some people complain about their ceramic braces creating discomfort. It might become hard to maintain your braces when you have pain in your mouth. Have you ever had a toothache such that you don’t want a bristle to touch it?

Your orthodontist can give you a special wax or a pain reliever. If it becomes worse, consult the orthodontist.

It takes a lot of commitment and sacrifice to take care of your ceramic braces. Keep them clean to avoid more problems and never forget to take them to the orthodontist every while.
