I’ve written about emotional fitness being just as important as physical fitness: maybe even more so for some of us, but without breath neither exists. So, here is an easy way to use breathing with sound to align your chakras and tune your foundation in 7 minutes.

We have more than seven chakras but these are the most common and we only need 1 minute on each to tune up! Being in harmony with the universe, each other and ones self starts from within, so what better way than to literally harmonize and balance your own natural energy exactly like a musician tunes their instrument.

Vowels are considered sacred in various traditions worldwide, when chanted, Dr. Deepak Chopra uses Bija Mantras and many English speaker practitioners now use these as well. The below is from that form of breath work and is easy to do for all ages, children being so open often love this exercise. Just do not do it while driving!

Find yourself a comfortable position seated or lying down ensuring your spine straight to keep your sound flowing easily. Breath in slowly and deeply before you begin, set the intention that you are balancing, cleansing and energizing these chakras. Repeat each chakra sound 7 times, taking a moment to breath in between each.

Root: 1st chakra is at the seat of your spine. Make a “Uuh” sounds similar to “cup” say it deeply and gently. This is for grounding and its color is Red, recite “Uuh” 7 times, as you will with each chakra. This manages your bodies waste elimination and corresponding organs.

Sacral: 2nd chakra is 3 inches below the navel, the sound is a deep “Ooo”, as in “you” and this is Orange, associated with divine sexual energy, the reproductive organs, Tantra and life force.

Solar Plexus: 3rd chakra just above the navel, make a high pitched “Oh”, as in “go,” Yellow color, and associates with digestion and those organs, fire, power and self mastery.

Heart: 4th chakra center of the chest. Tone using “Ah”, as in “ma” this embodies love and compassion, is Green and works with the heart of course as well as lungs and energy of love and compassion.

Throat: 5th chakra At the base of the neck, it is “Eye”, as in “my,” color blue and all about communication both speech, hearing, ears and vocals, as well as creation.

Third Eye: 6th chakra middle of the forehead. Use an “Aye” tone, as in “say,” Indigo, associated with imagination, intuition, psychic, insight, wisdom, mental activity and actual brain function.

Crown: 7th chakra your head and slightly above even, say a higher pitched “Eee” sound, as in “me”, white and/or violet and associated with induction of spiritual energy into the body with control of every aspect of body, mind, full enlightenment and union with God. Typically not fully open in most humans but many saints and other spiritual beings are depicted with halos which are said to be fully activated crown chakras: Transcendence.

In Sanskrit, charka translates to “wheels” or “spinning wheels” of light. According to sound healing expert Jonathan Goldman, there is now a scientific instrumentation that can record and validate these energies which have dated back centuries in many traditions worldwide including Tibetan and Hindu practices. Goldman is highly educated in sound healing and explains, “ chakras are places where subtle energy from higher planes begins to become denser. Imbalances in the physical body can be detected through the chakras. Frequently, healers who work with subtle energy can detect imbalances before they manifest in the physical body by feeling imbalances in chakras. By balancing the chakras, imbalances in the physical body will often disappear.” These sounds are considered to be Divine Emanations of the Creator.
