Senior citizens don’t typically get the respect they once used to. They tend to go forgotten or unseen in the current climate we live in. This article is a call to action to all to give gratitude to the elders in our families and communities. We owe them so much gratitude, and here is how we can do that.

SIMPLE AND FREE

The great thing about giving back, to anyone, not just seniors, is it doesn’t have to cost you a dime. A simple gesture such as assisting an elderly neighbor with running errands or carrying packages is a simple gesture to show you care. If you have the skill set, help out with household projects or lawn care.

OFFER FINANCIAL RELIEF

If you happen to own a business, a great way to give back is to offer a generous senior discount. Most seniors are living on a fixed income and have to make every dollar stretch. If you have the ability to provide them with the goods or services you provide for a discounted price then that is a great way to help. A good example of this is AvaCare Medical, a medical supply store in Lakewood, New Jersey. They offer to the public excellent advice on where and what supplies to buy to best suite their lifestyles and in addition to that, they offer senior discounts to their clientele, most of whom are seniors.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteering at a local senior center would not only make the day of a senior citizen but could also be very fulfilling. If you have a special skill, such as singing or playing music or arts and crafts, you could offer to play live or teach a class. If none of that sounds like your cup of tea, you could simply offer your presence. Some residents have little to no visitors coming to see them. A kind individual to speak with could make all the difference. You could bring a board game, movie, or snack and simply listen to what they have to say. For additional information, you can visit Create the Good, they have tips on how to get started with volunteering with seniors in your community.

TECHNOLOGICAL TUTOR

A good portion of the senior community are lacking in technical skills. A great way to give back to one or more seniors in your community would be to help them learn some computer basics. Familiarize them with email, Facetime, and social media so they can more easily stay in touch with family and friends that may live great distances away.

TRANSPORTATION

If you know of a senior citizen in your neighborhood that can no longer drive or does not feel safe traveling on their own, you could offer to bring them to and from doctors’ appointments and to run errands.

We enjoy many privileges in the new millennium. Without those ones who paved the way and hand down to us the opportunities we get to enjoy, we would have lives much different than what we now know. Bring joy to the pioneers.
