4 Unexpected Reasons Why You’re Not Losing Weight

And it's not because you love a good brownie...

When we think of weight loss, we think that we have to burn more calories than we are consuming, right?

If only it were that simple.

As a weight loss coach, I’ve come across a few reoccurring reasons as to why weight loss is a little more challenging than the “calories in vs calories out” method.

The reasons aren’t as typical as you might think, but I see them time and time again from a high percentage of my clients who have gone on to overcome them with my support..

1. You think you have to have it all figured out before you get started…

Your brain’s job is to keep you safe. When change happens, your brain tries everything in its power to keep life the way it has been. So, It comes up with all of these questions and concerns (aka fears) to keep you right where you are.

Thoughts like… “I don’t know how to lose this weight.. ”

Or

“Starting towards a healthier life is going to be really hard work — that doesn’t sound fun, so lets start *Insert later date here ;)*”

“A weight loss coach is too expensive, I can’t afford it right now”

When you start thinking about all of the things that you have to do in order to lose weight, your brain gets overwhelmed by analysis paralysis, which keeps you from making any moves towards your goal.

It’s not your job to have it all figured out — but you should ask yourself if these excuses (aka fears) are showing up because they are actually true or are they showing up as something that we just choose to believe?

Let’s rework this thought process..

“I don’t know how to lose this weight” ..You might not know what each day/week/month is going to look like, but you do know what foods to eat more of and that you can move your body more every day, right? Or how you can make just one or two healthy swaps in your day? If you don’t know how, there is a just-for-you coach out there to help you. (hint, if you feel like it might be me, keep reading…)

What about “A weight loss coach is too expensive, I can’t afford it right now”. Okay. Well, what will happen if you DON’T get support to beat this for good? If you don’t have your health, nothing else really matter anyways, right?

You don’t have to have it all figured out, you just have to be brave enough to take the first step and decide that your health is going to be a top priority.

2. You don’t truly believe that you can lose the weight…

You don’t think that you are the type of person that can be fit.. lies.

You’ve never been a “fit person” so you don’t know if you can do the things that “fit people do”.

It seems weird — you’ve never done it, so you don’t know how and its kind of scary to think about for too long.

Self doubt will stop you before you ever get started.

Too many thoughts of “I have too much weight to lose” or “What if I fail again? What will people think about me then?”

So, how do we rework these thoughts?

Daily repetition.

Daily affirmations and visualization could be a good place to start.

Instead of feeding your brain negative beliefs, how about priming your brain with successful thoughts to boost your confidence?

Visualize yourself in your ideal body. What does it look like? How do you feel?

Feel into those feelings and allow yourself to BE that person right now…because you are that person right now.

Send your body some love with some positive affirmations.

Tip: Set a reminder in your phone to go off a few times a day to remind yourself of how beautiful, confident, and happy you are.

Boost your confidence daily!

3. You haven’t tapped into your optimal mindset —

We are what we are because of our thoughts.. our thoughts have vibrations, what you put out, you get back…Your thoughts create your environment and physical self..

If we’re constantly thinking thoughts like “I’m fat” “I can’t lose weight” “Who am I to think that I can actually lose 50 pounds” then that is going to be our reality.

Switching up the thoughts to more positive affirmations like “I’m getting healthier and healthier every day” “I am a strong person who is losing fat every day” “I have lost 50 pounds and I feel incredible!” “I love myself at this weight”

It might feel hard in the beginning. But you are essentially retraining your subconcious brain that it can be done.

Your mindset is everything.

Prime your mind for success daily and that is your new reality.

4. You’re not being motivated by a strong enough “Why”…

“If you’re feeling unmotivated — you’re either not experiencing enough pain to change, or you’re not curious enough about the power of possibility” Chris Smith

For this one, you have to have the courage to dig deep and ask yourself “Why do I really want to lose weight?”

If it’s because your doctor told you to or you want to look good for your husband then your weight loss goals probably are not going to happen any time soon.

You need to dig deeper.

Do you want to lose weight so that you can be able to play with your kids without having to take a break? Or maybe its because you want to love what you see in the mirror again. Is it because you’re fed up with the lack of energy, the struggle to walk up a flight of stairs, or you want to be a healthier version of you so your kids can grow up with a healthier lifestyle too?

Whatever your why is… write it down and review it daily. Remind yourself of why you started in the first place when things get hard — because there will be days when you feel like quitting, or skipping a workout, or binge eating.

Remember, these 4 reasons for not losing weight do not have to continue to hold you back from losing weight for any longer.
