I had the pleasure to interview David Goodman. Since 1985 David has focused on improving the quality of care for thousands of seniors and disabled persons. David is highly respected as a visionary and an authority in the field of home care. Prior to starting Careshyft, David co-founded Companion Connection Senior Care, a National Membership Organization. This membership organization is dedicated to teaching others how to start their own non-medical home care companies and begin filling the great demand for these services. David also co-founded and grew Expert Home Care into one of New Jersey’s most successful home care agencies with an emphasis on live-in care. David has provided expert testimony in the home healthcare field, and has co-hosted (with Frank Esposito) Focus on Seniors Radio, a popular national radio talk show and podcast on senior care issues. David co-authored “The Road To Success-Volume 2” with Jack Canfield the world famous author of “Chicken Soup For The Soul”. The book was published in the summer of 2106 and is an Amazon best seller. He has also been recognized in Entrepreneur Magazine as well as the Wall Street Journal as a leading expert in the field of home health care. He frequently writes for various general interest and trade magazines on senior issues and home care.


Thank you so much for joining us! Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us the story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I have always been committed to helping others in need. When I was 22 years old I was in a bad car accident (hit by a drunk driver). I had already graduated from college at that point but needed additional curriculum in Physics and Organic Chemistry to go to Chiropractic school. I was working at night while going to school during the day. One night on my way home from work I was hit by a drunk driver and unfortunately suffered an injury at that time that required me to take a desk job. I changed my schedule and took a day job working for a home health care company and going to school at night to complete my needed extra credits. I quickly learned that the non-medical home care industry fit my personality well and was a good opportunity for me. After about one year I decided to open up a business of my own at 23 years old and I guess you could say the rest is history.

Can you share one of the major challenges you encountered when first leading the company? What lesson did you learn from that?

The very first issue for me was under capitalization, I knew the business but I did not know too many people. I was determined to succeed so I made a top 100 list and I decided to specialize in Live-in Care. I worked the list with different messaging and because of our live-in specialty was able to quickly build revenue and cash flow.

What are some of the factors that you believe led to your eventual success?

Determination and desire to learn. I was committed to a life style and that is why I decided to build a live-in business specialty. You see with live-in it is possible to have 20 clients and make well over 1M per year. It is true I need to be more targeted in my marketing but the “juice was worth the squeeze”

What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me before I Became CEO”?

Being a business owner requires a certain type of personality. You will work long hours in the beginning of your business. All the responsibility of the company is on your shoulders. You have to be the type of person that enjoys and excels with that type of pressure. List:

1.) Long Hours-I was 23 when I opened my business; you have to make a full time commitment to building any successful business. In the beginning you will not have a work/life balance.

2.) Need to feel comfortable with up’s and downs-When you are an entrepreneur you are on a wheel, one day you feel like a genius and the next you feel the opposite. You must get comfortable with this cycle and know that in the end, hard work and the guidance of a franchisor will lead you to success.

3.) Full responsibility-buck stops with you-As an entrepreneur you should never make excuses, there is a solution to every problem. You have to manage all that can be managed. The weather, politics, interest rates, the economy, competitors the list goes on but you will persevere if you believe in your product and your mission. At Careshyft we are committed to touching the lives of others and making a difference.

4.) Strategic decision making-When you are a leader you need to have excellent decision making and execute on those decisions. Do a full SWOT and then make your decisions and stick to the plan.

What advice would you give to your colleagues to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

I would strongly encourage that they be part of a franchise organization. Being a business owner can be lonely, it is important to be surrounded by like minded business owners with the same core mission.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?-

In my case I will be forever grateful for a strong family. When I was 23 my Uncle believe in me and my ability and lent me the money(he was an iron worker with four kids so extra money was not easy for him) I needed to start my company. I am also thankful to my Mom (who sadly passed in 2015), she was a very positive person who followed inspirational thinkers and imparted that knowledge to me growing up.

What are some of the goals you still have and are working to accomplish, both personally and professionally?

I am committed to building Careshyft into a National non-medical home care brand that will help seniors receive the care they need and want. Personally, I live in Princeton, NJ and would like to continue to help young entrepreneurs achieve success.

What do you hope to leave as your lasting legacy?

A visionary in the home health care industry that has helped changed the lives of thousands of people that include franchise owners, caregivers and careseekers.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would enhance people’s lives in some way, what would it be? You never know what your idea can trigger!

It is simple for me, I have committed my entire professional career to employing thousands of caregivers, creating wealth and success for non-medical home care agency owners and most importantly helping thousands of senior receive great home care. The Careshyft brand will continue to build on these successes.
