5 steps on how to adapt to life-changing situations

Resilience: it is not about the journey; it is about the awakening

It is our capacity to adapt to change and transform an experience into growth, so we can emerge stronger than before. The word resilient comes from the latin word resiliere- which means to experience a rebirth, recovery from a difficult experience with ease, acceptance and trust.   Learning how to process and release emotions from the physical body and mind is crucial to build a strong foundation for growth and evolution.

Being resilient does not mean not to experience adversity, difficulties or stress. It means that there is a way to release what doesn’t serve us to grow and tune into love, ease and peace.

Challenges in life are here to there to teach us something. They are more complex than just a feeling… they have lessons inside each experience that affect our bodies positively or negatively.

In order to learn how to decode the teaching, we need to understand its purpose by focusing on what this situation is trying to teach me, instead of why this is happening. Your breakdown is part of the lesson; it is the breakthrough. 

Here are five easy steps you can follow to adapt to life-changing or complex situations:

1. Observe your inner dialog

Observe your thoughts. Are you constantly looking for the worst scenario? Are you obsessing over what can go wrong, or are you observing your thoughts and choosing what serves your growth? What story do you tell yourself?

Now that you are observing your thought patterns and you can choose what to keep because it nurtures you. Identify what is real and what is a bit mind constructed. We tend to exaggerate negative scenarios. If you tend to be on the negative side:  forgive your thoughts and let them go.

Be fully present with your feelings, honor them and give yourself the possibility to choose a different perspective. The future is uncertain but being present in the moment will allow you to experience the wait for the resolution of the problem from a different awareness and perspective.

2. Shift your reference point

What was the lesson I learned from this situation? 

Accept what is available to you in the present. Honor how you feel. Build a routine that makes you feel good, not that only sounds good… something that inspires your growth. For example, train your mind with positive affirmations, songs or images such as:        

“This situation invites me to think differently. I am never given more that I can handle. I trust my capacity to overcome any obstacle. I am safe and supported.”

  3. Let go of what you can’t control and surrender your worries to a Higher power.

This step is about cultivating your faith and connecting with your body. Prayer, conscious breathing, meditation, gratitude are great ways to surrender and allow clarity and inspiration to guide you.

4.     Look for opportunities for self-discovery and service. 

 One of the best ways to be resilient and not fearful for the future is through being living in present. You can do this by working on your personal growth and wellbeing; besides, becoming your best self. By knowing yourself, you will discover a new confidence and comfort in your emotional, mental and physical body. Your highest and most valuable service is to work on yourself in order to be a vessel of peace and ease.

5. Prioritize your emotional well-being:

Investing your time in activities that make you feel good such as exercising, eating healthy, and cultivating mindful relationships and resting can be  good ideas to adopt physical well-being. Find new challenges to stay motivated with your wellness practice, and find a network that aligns with your goals. It is time to come back to the intelligence of the heart.
