Today at Xanxo Gaming, we will do temperature tests with an inexpensive B360 board, in conjunction with the processor, Intel Core i5 8400 (midrange), where we will see if there is any problem in the future that can concern us with low-cost B360 motherboards with this processor in specific.
You have heard before, that it is a very bad idea to pair a motherboard from an inexpensive chipset (B360 or H310) with a high-end processor; and in general, if it is a bad idea. Depending on the use that is made (especially very heavy load), this combination can create problems of high temperatures to the power phase of the motherboard (MOSFETs). We will divide this article into three sections:
Chipsets and Cheap Mothers Plates – where we will explain a little the different platform for a consumer.
MSI B360M Pro-VH – Where we will see some details of this model in conjunction with the Intel i5 8400 processor and temperatures of the tests.

Introduction: Economical Chipsets and Motherboards
To talk about chipsets, one must first talk about processors. As you know, there are two options: Intel and AMD. What they may not be aware of is that there are two categories for the regular user:
Processors that fall back on the platform for consumers.
Processors that fall on the platform for enthusiasts or also known as HEDT (High-End Desktop, in Spanish PCs of very high-end range).
In the current platform for consumer we have processors like (the main ones):
Intel (8th generation, Coffee Lake): Intel Core LGA 1151v2 (Celeron, Pentium, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7)
-AMD: Ryzen Socket AM4 (Ryzen APU, Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7)
In the current platform for enthusiasts / HEDT, we have processors such as:
-Intel: Intel X Series LGA 2066 (Core i7, Core i9)
-AMD: AMD Ryzen Thread ripper Socket TR4 (TR 1900X, TR 1920X, TR 1950X)
Today, the processor of choice is the Intel Core i5 8400 (8th generation, Coffee Lake). The compatible chipsets for this generation family are:
Chipset H310 (Input range)
Chipset B360 (Input range/average, but higher than H310)
Chipset H370 (Medium / high range, without overclocking capability)
Chipset Z370 (Medium / high range, with overclocking capability)
Chipset Z390 (Game-high, with overclock capability)
Today we have an economical gaming motherboard inside an entry-level chipset (B360). How do we know that a motherboard is considered economical? (Out of the price obviously). We will use three reference photos, of different brands, to note details that have similar low-cost motherboards.
The cheaper boards inside the chipsets B360 / H310 (Intel) and A320 / B350 / B450 (AMD) lack a dissipater in the power phase and these components are simpler (hence, higher heat generated / temperature).
We will take a look at the motherboard, MSI B360 Pro-VH.

When it comes to monitoring hardware, the program of choice of the moment is HWInfo64. It is important to see the current support that the software has with the motherboard.
At the time of writing this article, the support provided by HWInfo64 (with this model) is not good. This can be noticed in the elevated temperatures, 111.0C, 113.0C and 122.C. That does not mean that the board is malfunctioning, only that the support for the board is currently not adequate and is not reading the sensors properly. With luck, the future HWInfo64 will report the correct temperatures.
Using AIDA64, luck was not very different.
Luckily, we have ways to measure the temperature of the power phase without the need for sensors using the software. We stress the processor with an excessive load (somewhat less unreal) using the OCCT software, using AVX (a type of instruction that stresses the processor heavily). The stronger the “stress” to the processor, the greater the current necessary to sustain said load (hence, the greater heat generated in the power phase). This load is far above what one can generate just by playing.
The maximum heat point that could be measured was 66.20 degrees Celsius (ambient temperature of 20 degrees). That’s why they see a delta difference of 46.20 degrees. Although the board has no Heat sink, the power phase is efficient enough to work without any problem with the Intel i5 8400 processor. Obviously, the temperatures would be higher in the case that a more demanding processor is used, such as the i7 8700k.
With today’s tests, we can conclude that most inexpensive B360 boards should have no problem with Intel i5 8400 processors. For one to worry, the temperature in the power phase would have to reach around 100 degrees or plus. In the case that they are in a very tight budget, there would be no problem in using these plates in any of the brands (since most should have a similar performance in this department). Remember that these temperatures are valid for the Intel i5 8400. In case of using a more demanding processor, such as the i7 8700 or 8700k, the figure may change, but that is already the subject of another test.
