In my experience of excelling as a professional for past 15 years and now helping entry-level and mid-career professionals grow their career and earnings; following are the 4 essential skills you should start developing:

  1. Presentation Skills: Ability to showcase your work to significant others. This would include oral, written, body language, use of technology (PowerPoint, Video, Gif etc) and social media (Linkedin, Twitter etc).
  2. Assertiveness Skills: Ability to say ‘No’ when you want to say ‘No’. On the contrary, i see majority of us are saying ‘Yes’ when you want to say ‘No’. We do this to please our bosses, peers, even subordinates and get trapped into the vicious circle of pleasing others.
  3. Networking Skills: Ability to build long-term relationships with people in a mutually beneficial way. This will contribution to your professional life such as a change in career (with-in and outside your organisation) or a growth in business (generating lead and cracking deals).
  4. Negotiation Skills: Ability to approach your employer (or clients) with confidence and clear facts supporting your case and there’s no reason to think that you won’t get the pay raise or deal you deserve. Though you may have to learn to be persuasive, competitive, authentic and flexible.Though this is not an exhaustive list but if you could develop these time-tested four skills you will be poised to grow your career and demand higher earning.
