2 Broke Girls Star Beth Behrs: “I’d like to bring more awareness to the power of equine therapy”

I think equine therapy is one of the most powerful healing modalities. I’d like to bring more awareness to that.

I had the pleasure to interview actress Beth Behrs. Beth spent her early years on the East Coast, first in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, then in Lynchburg, Virginia, before moving with her family at the age of 15 to Marin County, just outside San Francisco. She studied drama both at high school and at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, appearing in a number of plays before enrolling to study drama at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television in Los Angeles. A few one-off parts on high profile US TV shows led to her breakthrough role as Caroline Channing in 2 Broke Girls (2011). Beth is currently one of the stars in the comedy series The Neighborhood. Beth will be in the upcoming female buddy action comedy TWIN BLADES, opposite rising Chinese actress, Ma Li. With the renewal of a second season of The Neighborhood and the upcoming girl-power version of Rush Hour, Beth has a lot to celebrate this upcoming spring/summer. She has also recently partnered with Zyrtec to talk about how she manages her allergies, beauty and fashion tips as well as her advice for outdoor entertaining.

Thank you so much for joining us Beth! Can you tell us the story of how you grew up?

I grew up in small town Virginia. Growing up I spent time running through the woods and snuggling with my dogs. I loved where I grew up. I loved being out in nature 24/7 and my house my parents built from scratch.

Can you share a story with us about what brought you to this specific career path?

I’ve wanted to be an actress since I was three years old. I used to act out the entire film “The Sound of Music” as a toddler. My parents thought to themselves, “we have to get this kid in theater.” I don’t remember a time where I didn’t want to sing and perform.

Can you tell us the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

I think meeting my idols. Singing for Julie Andrews, honoring Carol Burnett amongst my favorite comedians from childhood, collaborating with the most talented artists has been amazing.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

My first film set was American Pie 7… yup #7. I had done theater my whole life but never film. Day one, I was shooting on a mountain ski lift. First shot of the day. First take. The director screams over the megaphone: “Hey Beth. How about the next take you DONT SHOW US THAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR YOUR MARK.” I had to learn really quick and, on the fly, which I think ultimately really served me. I know how to act gracefully under immense pressure.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?

So many projects in the works! I am currently in Hong Kong shooting Twin Blades with Ma Li and I’m excited to start working on the second season of the Neighborhood!

I also recently teamed up with ZYRTEC®. I spend a lot of time outdoors and I love entertaining in my backyard, but I’ve also spent a lot of time pushing through things I love, or even avoiding them altogether, because of my spring allergies. And there are so many people who do the same thing. In fact, a recent survey found more than half of allergy sufferers said they canceled plans in the last month alone, specifically because of their symptoms. Eventually, I realized I shouldn’t have to cancel my plans because of itchy, watery eyes. That’s why I teamed up with ZYRTEC to share my tips to help other people manage their allergy symptoms, so they can enjoy their favorite al fresco moments this spring. For me, that includes ZYRTEC to help provide consistent relief.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Meditation changed my life. As did time in nature with my animals. Find what adds value to your life and make it a priority.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

Continue to fight for the rights of women and particularly sexual assault survivors. I think equine therapy is one of the most powerful healing modalities. I’d like to bring more awareness to that.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

My friends, family my husband and my animals are the most important parts of my life. I am so grateful to them for keeping me grounded and helping me feel loved and supported at all times.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

Stay present. Being present is the key to happiness. I’ve read and put into practice everything Eckert Tolle teaches. It’s truly the most transformational information. When you are fully in the present moment, everything becomes better. I use this to make me a better artist, horsewoman, friend, partner, etc.

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. 🙂

Carol Burnett! I’ve only met her a few times in passing but she is my hero. I want her to spend an hour telling me everything she can about her approach to physical comedy. I also love Amy Poehler and am dying to work with her. She’s kind, graceful, hilarious, intelligent and so damn funny!

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
