Dr. Shawn C. Jones is a ear, nose and throat physician, head and neck surgeon on a mission to combat the effects of the growing physician burnout epidemic by sharing his own inspiring story of recovery.
Dr. Jones shares his story of burnout and recovery in his book, Finding Heart in Art: A Surgeon’s Renaissance Approach to Healing Modern Medical Burnout (Advantage Media Group, January 2018).
Finding Heart in Art explores how bringing art and science together can promote healing to show how anyone can not only recover from burnout, but thrive by reconnecting with their humanity and spirit.
Looking beyond the individual experience, Dr. Jones is an advocate for making changes to the system so that it no longer fosters burnout among the individuals it trains but fosters compassion instead. Dr. Jones also offers a free burnout evaluation where doctors can receive immediate feedback regarding their relative risk of burnout.
Service has always been important to Dr. Jones. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve 1983 and served on Active Duty in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991 as a Captain in the Medical Corps. He has also given back on overseas medical mission trips once a year to Romania, Kenya, and Honduras.
Closer to home, Dr. Jones has served his community by being an outspoken champion of local anti-smoking ordinances in Paducah and an advocate for a smoke-free Kentucky. He has served on the board of trustees of the Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) for over 15 years, including a term as president for the 2011-2012 year. In 2016, he received the KMA’s Distinguished Service Award and the Community Connector Leadership Award. He is the current president of The Kentucky Foundation of Medical Care (KFMC) a 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to improving the health of all Kentuckians through medical education and public health initiatives.
Dr. Jones who was board certified in Otolaryngology in 1994. He graduated from the University of Louisville with bachelor’s degree with honors in biology, and received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He is the senior and founding member of his specialty group, Purchase ENT, in Paducah, KY and is a member of the gratis faculty of the University of Louisville School of Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology.
