Michael Steinhardt

Jewish- American hedge fund manager, investor, newspaper publisher, and philanthropist.

Michael H. Steinhardt- aka מייקל שטיינהרט was born in New York City in 1940. He grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and was known for his wit and intelligence from a young age. He graduated high school at 16 and went on to complete an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Business by the time he was 19. His financial career began as a research associate, staff writer, and securities analyst for various New York City businesses. In 1967 he established his own hedge fund company, Steinhardt Partners L.P., which became one of the most successful hedge funds in the history of Wall Street. Over the course of 28 years, Steinhardt Partners, L.P. made 24.5% annualized returns for its clients, a sum almost triple the returns of the S&P 500 index over the same period. Mr. Steinhardt used a range of investment instruments including stocks, bonds, long and short options, currencies and time horizons varying from 30 minutes to 30 days.   Mr. Steinhardt has always said that wealth and financial achievement are not enough to give value, meaning, or direction to life. He is deeply concerned by the erosion of Jewish life and the distancing of Jews away from Israel. In 1995, Michael Steinhardt closed his lucrative hedge fund to devote his efforts and fortune to the Jewish world. He and his wife Judy direct their Jewish philanthropic investments through The Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life, for which he acts as chair. He is the co-founder of Birthright Israel, supports the development of Hebrew Language Charter Schools, and has given to Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. He is the primary benefactor of New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2001, Mr. Steinhardt published his memoirs, No Bull: My Life In and Out of the Markets (John Wiley & Sons, 2001). The Steinhardts have three children and thirteen grandchildren.   https://steinhardtfoundation.org/
