Owner and CEO

Experienced business executive Dana Bloom—along with husband and Co-CEO Howard Bloom—created Proper Food to give other busy executives like themselves a solution to the daily dilemma of choosing quality vs convenience when grabbing a meal downtown. Proper Food, located in San Francisco, and soon New York City, represents the couple’s take on fast-casual with a fresh grab-and-go concept that promotes a convenient avenue to higher quality food. “We found ourselves spending our lunch breaks waiting in line,” Bloom says. “We thought, ‘why isn’t there a better option?’” Five years and nine storefronts later, the duo kicks off the brand’s East Coast expansion with New York City’s Financial District in Fall 2018. With a clear eye for business, Bloom started her college career at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor’s in Economics in 1998. She dove into the industry as an associate for global management consultancy Bain and Company, later joining her and Howard’s first tech startup during the dot-com boom of the late ‘90s. After the bubble burst, she left the startup to work in private equity before returning to her alma mater for her MBA, completed in 2004. Returning to Bain and Company—she relocated across the pond to London with her husband for three years. In Europe, the couple experienced a broader variety of quality takeaway options, and the concept began to take root. After moving back to California, Bloom joined online accessories brand Stella & Dot, at which she spent six years, first as Vice President of Strategy, Marketing and Global Ecommerce and then launching the company’s first-ever sister brand, Keep Collective. As Keep’s General Manager, Bloom developed the concept, educated and trained over 10,000 independent business owners, and grew the keepsake jewelry brand to over $50 million in revenue. “Growing Keep was a highlight of my career,” she says. “As a mission-based company, our goal was to create flexible entrepreneurship opportunities for women. It was incredibly rewarding to impact so many women’s lives, and to play a part in some truly inspiring success stories.” By 2018, however, with Proper Food hitting a stride, Dana made the business a family one, taking up Co-CEO duties and setting her sights on expansion. When not hard at work, Bloom enjoys time with her husband and eight-year-old son Micah by staying active outdoors—hiking, cycling, and swimming in their hometown of San Francisco. Having visited more than 50 countries, Bloom loves to explore new places, cultures and foods. Bloom and her family share a passion for food and enjoy growing, cooking and eating together.
