Lee den Hond

Businesswoman, extreme sportswoman, Inspirational speaker, adventurer, philanthropist and undeniable optimist

Lee den Hond is an award-winning businesswoman, sought-after public speaker and extreme athlete.  She is the CEO of Blue Platinum Event, which she founded in 2004.  In 2013 she became the third South African woman to summit Mount Everest.  In 2015 she was recognised as South African Businesswoman of the Year in the Entrepreneur category.

Lee den Hond is living proof that when purpose is bigger than challenge, nothing is impossible.   Lee officially adds author to her long list of achievements as she launches her book – What happens when you say Yes – a book about Altitude, attitude and a greater purpose – a book whose purpose it is to assist its readers in how to live a 100% life.

Her inspiring and easy to read memoir takes a look at how a fresh-faced 30 year-old hoping to pursue a career in international sportswear marketing in New York, determined to make it big in the Big Apple has her hopes and dreams derailed after experiencing a devastating knife attack in New York. Lee returned home to South Africa with barely a cent to her name.  From rock bottom, she built an award-winning events company out of nothing and transformed herself into a remarkable extreme athlete.  In her book, Lee details how, instead of focusing on all the reasons not to do something, her mindset is rather to focus on why she should do it - which frees her up to achieve whatever she sets out to do.

So what was Lee’s why? In 2013, Lee became the 3rd South African Woman to summit Mt. Everest.  In 2017, she completed an ultra-distance race of 251kms in Morocco taking on the Sahara Desert in the Marathon des Sables, an endurance event known as the “Toughest Footrace in the World”. Adventurist at heart, Lee took on these epic journeys of her own to change the lives of hundreds of others, to raise funds to create a haven for the poorest of the poor. The Field of Dreams Centre was Lee’s vision for the children and adults of the Schaumburg community near Hartbeespoort Dam. When Lee was battling the elements on both of these epic adventures, she was driven not only by her own grit and determination, but by her vision of a new life for this community.

Her inspiring talk, Be Inspired, has gained critical acclaim, highlighting the ability to overcome challenges in the pursuit of goals.  Her ability to relate to her audience and link strategy execution and the obstacles of running a business to the difficulties faced on the summit of Everest and the often brutal trails of the Sahara desert make Lee a highly in-demand motivational speaker.

In November 2019, Lee will once again put her mind, body and perseverance to the test as she prepares for the 160km Everest Trail Run - a route widely considered to be one of the highest altitude races on the planet.

For Lee den Hond, this challenge is one she will relish with the same determination and passion that she has achieved with every other challenge.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
